This New Study Exposes Health Misinformation Prevalence On TikTok
Recent findings from a study conducted by U.S. researchers have put the spotlight on the reliability of health content shared on the Chinese social network, TikTok. With social media platforms rapidly becoming go-to sources for information across various domains, including health and wellness, the veracity of such content has come under scrutiny. The study, focusing on the dissemination of health advice on TikTok, revealed a concerning trend: a significant portion of this content lacks factual evidence, potentially endangering users' health.
According to the research, published in the journal Otolaryngology, nearly half of the videos related to sinusitis—a condition selected for the study—contained information that was not factual. This investigation aimed to evaluate the accuracy and source of health information on TikTok, especially given the platform's vast reach and influence. "There is high-quality and factual information out there on social media platforms such as TikTok, but it may be very difficult to distinguish this from information disseminated by influencers that can actually be harmful," mentioned Christopher Roxbury, MD, a surgeon and rhinology expert at UChicago Medicine, underscoring the critical need for users to discern credible information.
Study Methodology and Findings
The researchers undertook a detailed analysis within a 24-hour period to mitigate the influence of TikTok's dynamic algorithm. By examining content tagged with hashtags related to sinusitis, such as #sinusitis, #sinus, and #sinusinfection, they classified the videos based on content type, category, and reliability. This classification was not solely based on the researchers' judgment but also leveraged The Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool for Audiovisual Material, a validated empirical resource, to ensure objectivity.
The study's findings were alarming: 44% of the videos analyzed were flagged for containing non-factual information. Videos created by 'non-medical influencers', who are content creators with more than 10,000 followers but do not identify as medical professionals, were particularly prone to misinformation. These videos not only had a higher likelihood of containing incorrect information but also received lower quality scores compared to content produced by medical professionals, who predominantly shared educational material.
The Impact of Misinformation
The proliferation of such non-factual videos poses significant risks to public health, potentially deterring individuals from seeking professional medical advice or opting for necessary treatment. "I frequently have patients in the clinic asking me questions about things they saw online or on social media, and I have found that many times the information has steered patients in the wrong direction," stated Christopher Roxbury, the study's senior author. He further highlighted the detrimental effects of misinformation, noting that in some instances, it led patients to pursue ineffective treatments, and in more severe cases, resulted in harm.
