School heat: Finally, a cool solution for struggling students!
Rising summer temperatures across India are making it increasingly difficult for millions of students to learn. In many government-run schools, indoor temperatures frequently hit between 40 and 45 degrees Celsius, creating environments that are both uncomfortable and potentially unsafe for children. To tackle this escalating issue, Yuva Unstoppable—a prominent Indian NGO with a track record of supporting 10 million+ beneficiaries across education, environment, healthcare, and livelihoods, and backed by 100+ corporate CSR and philanthropic partners—is rolling out climate-responsive cooling solutions in vulnerable schools.
This heat crisis goes beyond mere physical discomfort; it represents a major obstacle to education for 26 million children attending government schools. As temperatures rise, students struggle with exhaustion, dehydration, and a lack of focus. Research shows that even a single day where temperatures climb above 29 degrees Celsius can negatively impact math and reading performance. Furthermore, prolonged exposure to high heat poses long-term health risks for young children, who are less capable of regulating their body temperature than adults.
In response, Yuva Unstoppable has created a multi-faceted heat adaptation framework designed to meet the specific needs of individual schools. Their interventions incorporate large-space Venti coolers, solar power backups, rainwater harvesting systems, cool roof painting, and tree plantation drives. The initiative prioritizes a mix of passive cooling, active cooling, and integrated campus design. By employing smart techniques like reflective roof coatings, the organization works to minimize heat absorption in school buildings, allowing for significant reductions in indoor temperatures without relying solely on electricity. Instead of applying a uniform solution, Yuva Unstoppable implements varied combinations of these climate-resilient measures to create scalable heat adaptation models. While some schools receive a comprehensive package—including cooling systems, solar backup, water conservation, cool roofs, and green cover—others are provided with tailored solutions based on their specific infrastructure needs and local climate conditions. "Earlier, the classrooms would become extremely hot during the afternoon, making it difficult for us to concentrate on studies. After the installation of the Venti coolers, the classrooms feel much more comfortable, and it has become easier for us to learn even during peak summer months," shared a student from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV), Rajoda, Ahmedabad. Guided by the vision of its Founder, Mr. Amitabh Shah, Yuva Unstoppable is working to turn heat-stressed classrooms into safe, comfortable, and productive spaces where students can succeed. Highlighting the necessity of climate-resilient learning environments, Amitabh Shah said, "We must ensure that every child, irrespective of their background, can learn in an environment that safeguards their health and supports their growth, rather than allowing extreme heat to become a barrier to their development." Yuva Unstoppable is collaborating with various partners to deploy these cooling systems across high-risk areas. The current infrastructure deficit remains significant, with reports indicating that only a small fraction of schools possess the necessary electricity for adequate cooling and ventilation. By installing these specialized cooling systems, Yuva Unstoppable is fundamentally altering the daily experience for countless students. This effort requires ongoing support to expand to more schools and anganwadis across the country. Providing a cooler classroom today is a direct investment in a stronger future for the students the NGO supports every day. In addition to cooling measures, Yuva Unstoppable involves students in tree plantation drives to expand green cover around school campuses. This helps lower ambient temperatures while fostering environmental awareness among children. The program includes planting fruit-bearing and medicinal trees, encouraging students to actively care for them, which builds a sense of long-term environmental responsibility and ownership. As summer heat continues to intensify, the work performed by Yuva Unstoppable serves as a critical lifeline for children on the front lines of this climate challenge. Their dedication to improving the physical conditions of learning centers is a vital step toward protecting the educational progress of the nation's youth. Amitabh Shah established Yuva Unstoppable after declining a Wall Street role at JP Morgan following his Master's degree from Yale University, opting instead to work on the ground in India. He holds the distinction of being the youngest Indian to receive the US Government's International Ellis Island Award, an honor previously bestowed upon President Bill Clinton, President George Bush, Muhammad Ali, Indra Nooyi, and Malala Yousafzai. The organization's impact has been recognized by former Presidents Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and Shri Ram Nath Kovind, and Amitabh Shah has been appointed as a Viksit Bharat Ambassador. Impact at a Glance:
