The runway presentation explored the intersection of traditional Northeast textiles and contemporary fashion, proving that cultural identity can thrive in modern design. It offered a vital stage for weavers and designers, underscoring how indigenous craftsmanship can drive new avenues in tourism, creative entrepreneurship, and fashion.

Meghalaya Ryndia Silk Takes Centre Stage

A highlight of the event was the Meghalaya showcase, featuring the work of designer Batkyntilin Mawthou from Shillong and weaver Iaineh from the Ri-Bhoi district. Their collection demonstrated the commercial viability and modern appeal of Ryndia silk, one of the region’s most iconic textiles.

Supported by PRIME Meghalaya—the state’s flagship entrepreneurship initiative—this presentation successfully brought Meghalaya’s contemporary fashion and traditional craftsmanship to the Bharat Mandapam runway.

Celebrity dancer Kanchan Chakma, known for her appearance on Sony Entertainment Television’s Super Dancer Chapter 5, served as the showstopper. Her performance seamlessly blended fashion with the performing arts, highlighting the elegance and versatility of Ryndia silk.

The collection paid homage to the heritage of the Garo, Khasi and Jaintia communities, illustrating how traditional textiles can be adapted for modern wardrobes while remaining true to their roots.

Celebrating Northeast Women and Cultural Diversity

The International Reinvent Northeast segment also honored the Naari Shakti of the region, presenting a collection of traditional and contemporary attire inspired by the diverse weaving traditions of the Seven Sister states. The runway featured customary designs and indigenous textiles, underscoring the pivotal role women play in sustaining these cultural practices. A vibrant Manipuri dance performance further enriched the event, celebrating the beauty and heritage of Meitei culture.

This segment served as a reminder that the region’s heritage encompasses far more than just textiles; it includes dance, art, customs, and the enduring stories of the communities that preserve them.

Models Representing Northeast India and Beyond

The runway featured a diverse group of models from across Northeast India and the rest of the country, including Zara Limz from Nagaland, Lisa from Meghalaya, Ananya from Assam, Anita Daimary from Bodoland, Rupanjana from Kolkata and Dechan from Leh, among others. Their presence underscored the event’s mission to unite India’s diverse regions through fashion and elevate the national profile of Northeast culture.

Additionally, models showcased traditional sarees from NEHHDC’s Purbashree brand, highlighting the quality and cultural significance of fabrics like Eri Silk. Those interested in these authentic garments can view the collection on the official Purbashree platform.

Connecting Weaves with Entrepreneurship and Markets

International Reinvent Northeast emphasized the potential for traditional craftsmanship to thrive in contemporary markets. By providing a national stage for weavers and designers, the platform created visibility for indigenous fabrics and demonstrated how fashion can empower artisans, women, and local creative industries.

The Meghalaya presentation, in particular, served as a prime example of how Ryndia silk can be reimagined into modern silhouettes without losing the identity and craftsmanship associated with the traditional textile.
