See New Zealand through the lens of Dr. Mukesh Batra and support a great cause

The Kamalnayan Bajaj Art Gallery in Nariman Point, Mumbai, saw a bustling turnout for the launch of Padma Shri Dr Mukesh Batra’s 58th photography exhibition, "Magic Moments – Through the Kiwi Lens." With Zayed Khan and Mandira Bedi leading the opening, the event successfully channeled the scenic allure of New Zealand into a charitable initiative for the Victoria Memorial School for the Blind.

Actors Zayed Khan and Mandira Bedi were among the first to arrive, adding a touch of star power and warmth to an evening that bridged the worlds of cinema, art, commerce, diplomacy, and philanthropy. The event drew a distinguished crowd, including Lieutenant General Kuldip Singh Brar, Graham Riuse, Consul General and Trade Commissioner, New Zealand, Daniel Quer Confalonieri, Consul General, Argentina, Tibor Kovacs -- Trade Attache, Consulate General of Hungary, Malati and Mudit Jain, Nidhi Choudhari, Director -- NGMA, Kamalnayan Bajaj Art Gallery Director Pooja Bajaj, Mala Goenka, Honorary Secretary and Trustee of the Victoria Memorial School for the Blind, Vandana Sethhi among others.

The exhibition is anchored by a poignant question: can a photograph extend beyond the confines of a gallery to impact a life? For this collection, Dr Batra traveled through New Zealand, documenting everything from serene, glass-like lakes mirroring snow-dusted peaks and wind-swept coastlines to sun-dappled forests and urban centers glowing under expansive southern skies.

However, the true narrative of the exhibition extends past the imagery itself. Running until September 12, the showcase is dedicated to raising funds for the Victoria Memorial School for the Blind. There is a subtle, moving irony in the fact that these images—created through light, color, and vision—are being used to assist those who navigate the world without sight.

"Photography has taught me to notice what we often rush past — a changing sky, a reflection on water, a moment of perfect stillness. But for me, the true value of these images begins when their beauty can serve a larger purpose. If what I see through my lens can, in some small way, help those who experience the world without sight, then these photographs become far more meaningful than anything I could simply hang on a gallery wall," said Padma Shri Dr Mukesh Batra.

Dr Batra avoids the typical postcard aesthetic, instead capturing New Zealand with a deeper perspective. A body of water is transformed into a study of silence; a mountain peak is framed by a breaking cloud; a path fades into lush greenery, while urban lights pierce the twilight. His work preserves those ephemeral moments that vanish as quickly as they appear.

For Dr Batra, the essence of photography lies in observation—the way light interacts with a landscape, the power of stillness over spectacle, and the ability of a single frame to hold an emotion long after the event. This sensitivity is a hallmark of his charitable work. Throughout his career, he has leveraged his exhibitions to champion various social causes, ensuring that the beauty he captures serves a purpose far greater than mere display, reaching those who need it most.
