From Rajkot to London: Mangalya Parmar is redefining the Gujarati dancer narrative.
Mangalya Parmar: The Gujarati Dancer Rising in London’s Urban Scene. Strap: From grueling late-night training in Rajkot to competing on global stages, Mangalya Parmar is carving out a reputation within London’s vibrant hip-hop and dance community. GUJARAT — At 28, hip-hop dancer and choreographer Mangalya Parmar has transitioned from his early days in Rajkot, Gujarat, to performing at major international events, including London’s O2 Arena Wembley.
His path has been defined by relentless discipline and the sheer volume of practice he put in while his family slept. "After attending dance classes following school, I would return home around 9:30 pm, have dinner and begin practising again around 11:30 pm. I often continued until 7 am while my mother slept and prepared for work the next morning. The hours when nobody was watching were the hours that changed me," he said.
Since relocating to London in 2024, Parmar has balanced training, performing, and teaching with choreography positions at two separate dance companies. His background also spans film and television, having contributed to projects linked to Masti 4, Sardaar Ji 3 and Housefull 4. Additionally, he was a participant on the Gujarati dance reality series Nach Mari Sathe. Within the competitive dance circuit, Parmar has entered the World of Dance (WOD) competition on three occasions. His track record includes a Top 5 placement at the World of Dance India Qualifier, a team appearance at the WOD London Qualifier, and a near-Top 5 finish in the solo category at the most recent London Qualifier. Furthermore, he advanced to the Top 16 at the Bad Vibes dance battle in Bangkok and earned a selection for RF Jam Vietnam. With training spanning Hip-Hop, Popping, Waacking, House, Krump, Locking, Contemporary, Freestyle and Bollywood, Parmar offers a versatile performance style. His work blends rhythmic accuracy, fluid motion, and emotive musical interpretation. He balances sharp Popping isolations against high-energy Hip-Hop sequences, utilizing precise footwork and strategic pauses to add depth to his routines. By integrating improvisation and dynamic shifts, he demonstrates a philosophy that values musicality as much as technical skill. For Parmar, London represents more than just a change of scenery; it serves as a gateway to a varied creative network and professional advancement. "London is one of the world’s most exciting destinations for dancers and choreographers. This city offers an ecosystem that supports our growth, from creative-development programmes and rehearsal spaces to mentoring, auditions and performance platforms," he said. He points to The Place, which promotes opportunities for dance artists, and Impact Dance, which aids performers through development programs and by providing access to creative resources. From his late-night training sessions in Rajkot to his appearances on international stages, Parmar’s career path illustrates the dedication needed to succeed in the dance industry. As he builds his presence in London, he stays motivated by the core belief that defined his early years: real progress happens during the hours when no one is watching.
