Forward Deployed Engineer: The IIT Program Silicon Valley Desperately Needs Now

Silicon Valley is scrambling to fill a specific role, and now, an IIT campus is providing a dedicated training ground for it. Every hiring season brings a position that recruiters identify more quickly than job boards can classify. For 2026, that title is Forward Deployed Engineer. These AI specialists move beyond lab-based model building; they integrate directly into a client's organization to deploy functional agentic systems, taking full responsibility for the results rather than simply delivering a report.

The magnitude of this transition is evident in the data. According to Indeed job-posting figures referenced by The New Stack and MarkTechPost, FDE listings surged 729% year-on-year through April 2026, with seasoned professionals in the US commanding salaries between $250,000 to $400,000 or more. This trend is structural. As businesses transition from simple, single-shot AI queries to complex, multi-step agentic workflows, the primary constraint has moved from model performance to deployment—a process that cannot be offloaded to a simple API call.

Forward Deployed Engineer: IIT Program for Silicon Valley

IIT Gandhinagar’s Residential PG Diploma in AI-ML & Agentic AI Engineering stands as the nation's inaugural postgraduate AI course conducted entirely on an IIT campus, moving away from the online-only model. For the next cohort, the program has tailored its curriculum to focus on Forward Deployed Engineering, synchronizing existing coursework on applied evaluation frameworks and multi-agent architecture design with the demands of this emerging job category.

"Our engagements with industry leaders clearly indicated to us that they are increasingly pivoting to the FDE role," said Prof. Sam Placid, CEO, Competency Advancement Academy (CAA), IIT Gandhinagar. "In keeping with our stated objective of aligning our curriculum with industry needs, we have tweaked our curriculum to address this requirement."

The Competency Advancement Academy (CAA) at IIT Gandhinagar manages the program. Entry is determined by AINPT, a proprietary examination followed by a panel interview, and each cohort has a restricted number of available spots.

The upcoming cohort is scheduled to commence in September 2026.
