Dr Mukesh Batra's New Zealand Photos Are Changing Lives in Mumbai

The Kamalnayan Bajaj Art Gallery in Nariman Point, Mumbai, was filled to capacity for the launch of Padma Shri Dr Mukesh Batra’s 58th photography exhibition, titled Magic Moments – Through the Kiwi Lens. With Zayed Khan and Mandira Bedi leading the opening, the event highlighted the stunning landscapes of New Zealand while raising funds for the Victoria Memorial School for the Blind.

Actors Zayed Khan and Mandira Bedi arrived early, adding a touch of star power to an evening that successfully bridged the worlds of cinema, art, commerce, diplomacy, and charity. The guest list featured a diverse group of attendees, including Lieutenant General Kuldip Singh Brar, Graham Riuse, Consul General and Trade Commissioner, New Zealand, Daniel Quer Confalonieri, Consul General, Argentina, Tibor Kovacs -- Trade Attache, Consulate General of Hungary, Malati and Mudit Jain, Nidhi Choudhari, Director -- NGMA, Kamalnayan Bajaj Art Gallery Director Pooja Bajaj, Mala Goenka, Honorary Secretary and Trustee of the Victoria Memorial School for the Blind, Vandana Sethhi, and several others.

The exhibition is driven by a poignant question: can a photograph do more than just hang on a wall—can it actually change a life? Dr Batra’s latest collection takes viewers on a journey through New Zealand, featuring images of serene lakes mirroring snow-dusted mountains, rugged coastlines, sun-dappled forests, and urban centers glowing under expansive southern skies. However, the true impact of the exhibition extends past the visual artistry. Running until September 12, the event directs all proceeds to the Victoria Memorial School for the Blind. There is a profound irony and beauty in the fact that these images, created through light and color, are being used to assist those who navigate the world without sight.

"Photography has taught me to notice what we often rush past — a changing sky, a reflection on water, a moment of perfect stillness. But for me, the true value of these images begins when their beauty can serve a larger purpose. If what I see through my lens can, in some small way, help those who experience the world without sight, then these photographs become far more meaningful than anything I could simply hang on a gallery wall," said Padma Shri Dr Mukesh Batra.

Dr Batra avoids the typical postcard aesthetic in his portrayal of New Zealand. Instead, he captures a quiet moment in a body of water, the dramatic opening of clouds over a peak, a path winding into lush greenery, or the sudden illumination of a city at twilight. His work succeeds in preserving those transient seconds that vanish as quickly as they appear.

For Dr Batra, the essence of photography lies in observation—the way light interacts with a landscape, the power of stillness over spectacle, and the ability of a single frame to hold an emotion long after the event. This sensitivity is a hallmark of his charitable work. Throughout his career, he has leveraged his exhibitions to champion various social causes, ensuring that the beauty he captures serves a purpose far greater than mere display, reaching those who truly need assistance.
