India and China Unite to Elevate Ayurveda Education on the Global Stage

Ayurveda finds a platform at SCO traditional medicine forum as India and China strengthen academic collaboration

Ayurveda was highlighted during a major international dialogue on traditional medicine in China this week. Dr. Dhanwantari Jha, an educator from India, attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's 2026 Forum on Traditional Medicine and formalized an educational agreement with a prominent Chinese university specializing in traditional medicine.

Representing Ayurved Nidhi and Ayurveda from India, Dr. Dhanwantari Jha was a guest at the forum's Traditional Medicine Education Dialogue, which took place on Sept. 17 in Nanchang, Jiangxi province. According to the host, Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the session convened over 100 scholars, university delegates, and experts from nations including Russia, France, Portugal, Belarus, South Korea, Pakistan, and India.

India-China Ayurveda Education Pact

The broader forum, running from Sept. 16 to 18, centered on the theme "Empowering Traditional Medicine with Modern Technology to Co-build Human Health for All." It gathered government officials, industry leaders, and healthcare academics to address topics ranging from educational standards and technology to research and international collaboration. For Jha, the event served as a venue to position Ayurveda within a global conversation about how distinct medical systems can collaborate while preserving their unique characteristics.

Ayurveda enters the education dialogue

The education segment zeroed in on two critical areas as traditional medicine gains global traction: the harmonization of educational standards and qualification recognition, and the integration of digital tools and industry partnerships in practitioner training.

Dr. Jha’s presence introduced an Ayurvedic viewpoint to a dialogue otherwise dominated by traditional Chinese medicine and other Asian systems.

A report from India prior to the event identified Jha as the sole Indian participant and Ayurveda representative at the academic dialogue. This should be viewed as an attributed claim regarding the invitation rather than a verified census of every attendee at the wider forum.

Jha advocated for an international approach to traditional medicine education that prioritizes mutual understanding over forced uniformity.

His suggestions included incorporating introductory studies of various medical systems into professional curricula, leveraging digital platforms for global Ayurveda training, creating shared educational resources, and fostering comparative research to help students and professionals from different backgrounds better grasp each other's practices.

His philosophy treats Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine as distinct, complementary knowledge traditions that can benefit from structured academic exchange.

India-China education partnership

A key outcome of Jha’s visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Ayurved Nidhi and Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, creating a formal structure for collaboration between the Indian organization and the Chinese institution.

This partnership opens doors for joint educational programs, faculty and student exchanges, hybrid learning models, workshops, and collaborative research.

The university, which is part of the SCO Medical University Alliance, maintains a robust international cooperation strategy. Jiangxi University notes that it operates within the SCO framework to foster cooperation in medical education, research, and clinical services.

This MOU effectively links Ayurved Nidhi and Indian Ayurveda education with a major Chinese academic entity within a wider regional network. While the university’s post-forum report confirms the dialogue and the launch of the international alliance, the specific MOU between Ayurved Nidhi and Jiangxi University is documented in materials provided for this report.

From dialogue to international alliance

The education dialogue also saw the establishment of the International Education Alliance for Traditional Medical Techniques.

Jiangxi University noted that representatives from countries including Russia, India, and Belarus participated in the alliance's launch. The initiative is founded on principles of diversity, inheritance, and innovation, covering areas such as cross-border education, joint technical training, an international curriculum database, and collaborative research. For Ayurveda, this alliance offers a formal mechanism to be represented alongside other traditional systems in global discussions about the future of medical education.

Digital education and the next generation of Ayurveda learning

Jha has been actively expanding international Ayurveda education through Ayurved Nidhi, utilizing both online and offline methods to reach a global student base.

This experience aligned well with the forum’s focus on digital transformation.

The host university identified digital empowerment as a core pillar for the future of traditional medicine education, alongside standard alignment and industry integration. Its president, Zhu Weifeng, advocated for resources that transcend geographical borders to become more accessible to international students.

Jha argued that digital tools should serve to enhance traditional learning rather than replace its essential teacher-led and practical components.

In his view, online platforms can facilitate theoretical knowledge and global access, while universities and clinical institutions must remain the bedrock of mentorship and hands-on training.

A wider SCO traditional medicine agenda

The education dialogue was just one component of the larger 2026 SCO Forum.

The event commenced in Nanchang on Sept. 17, with senior officials and experts engaging in discussions on innovation, industrial cooperation, and cultural exchange.

Organizers highlighted that the event, which included exhibitions and research visits, aimed to foster cooperation across education, industry, and technology. The forum builds upon a multi-year SCO process, with the Traditional Medicine Forum evolving into a key platform for sector-wide exchange since its 2019 inception. The 2024 forum concluded with the Nanchang Consensus.

A bridge between two traditions

The significance of Jha’s participation extends beyond his presence at the forum, encompassing a blend of representation, academic exchange, and institutional partnership.

As India’s Ayurveda and China’s Traditional Chinese Medicine continue to evolve through their own historical paths, the framework discussed in Nanchang aims to create a space for these systems to interact while respecting their differences.

For Ayurved Nidhi, the Nanchang meeting marked a trifecta of progress: high-level dialogue, entry into an international alliance, and a direct partnership with Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The forum’s overarching message was that traditional medicine is increasingly viewed through the lens of modern standards, research, and cross-border cooperation.

For Ayurveda, this provided a vital opportunity to integrate its educational heritage into the global conversation while establishing a new pathway for collaboration with China’s academic community.

As the SCO traditional medicine platform advances, the connection forged in Nanchang serves as a model for how distinct medical traditions can engage through shared research and mutual learning.
