Assam Flood Relief: Delivering Essential Aid to 12,000 Displaced Families

New Delhi, India: Persistent monsoon downpours have left Assam in a state of crisis, displacing thousands of families and submerging entire villages. With critical infrastructure damaged and roads blocked, communities are struggling to secure food, clean water, and medical aid. To address this, True Impact Foundation has joined forces with Bharat Benevita Foundation to launch an on-the-ground flood relief operation in the state’s most severely impacted areas.

To date, the relief mission has provided support to more than 12,130 individuals across 24+ villages within four districts: Sivasagar, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, and Charaideo. Beyond distributing essential supplies, the teams are managing a daily cooked meal programme that currently feeds 1,500 people every day.

Working in close coordination with local residents, field teams have identified the families facing the most critical shortages. Despite the challenges posed by submerged roads and compromised infrastructure, volunteers have navigated difficult terrain to deliver necessities to those cut off from markets, healthcare, and standard supply chains.

The aid packages provided include dry rations, grocery kits, medicine, rain protection gear, mosquito nets, sanitary pads, bedsheets, mats, ORS, hygiene supplies, buckets, and utensils. Additionally, the teams are supplying phenyl and bleaching powder to shelter homes. The operation has prioritized the most vulnerable, including children, the elderly, daily wage earners, and families who have lost their food sources.

For Assam, flooding is a persistent humanitarian challenge rather than a seasonal anomaly. Heavy rains and overflowing rivers frequently destroy homes, submerge farmland, and cut off access to schools, markets, and medical facilities. For families reliant on farming or daily wages, the impact persists long after the waters recede, affecting their income and stability for months. While some families have relocated to temporary shelters, others remain trapped in partially flooded homes, waiting for assistance.

Speaking about the importance of reaching affected families with timely assistance, Shameem, Founder of True Hope Foundation, said: "When a family is affected by a flood, the need is not limited to one thing. People need food, medicines, clean surroundings, basic household supplies, and protection from the conditions around them. Our focus has been to reach communities directly and provide support that can make their immediate situation a little easier. With the support of our partners, we want to continue reaching families who are still waiting for essential assistance."

This approach underscores a core philosophy of the relief effort: effective disaster response must address multiple, overlapping needs simultaneously, rather than restricting aid to a single category of supplies.

The operation is funded by the generosity of donors across India, with contributions matched on the ground by volunteers, local coordinators, and community members who have collaborated to pinpoint areas in urgent need. Even with transportation disruptions and limited access in several flood-hit zones, the teams have remained dedicated to reaching vulnerable families promptly, ensuring aid is distributed in an organized manner to those in greatest need.

For many, receiving these supplies offered more than just immediate help; it served as a reassurance that they had not been forgotten. Volunteers interacting with the affected communities observed that the disaster’s toll extends far beyond visible destruction, encompassing lost belongings, documents, agricultural tools, and income sources that make recovery a lengthy process. Despite this, the teams witnessed remarkable resilience, with families sharing shelter and helping neighbors access aid—a spirit of solidarity that has been as vital to the response as the supplies themselves.

Strength in Partnership

The partnership between True Impact Foundation and Bharat Benevita Foundation demonstrates how collaboration enhances disaster response by pooling resources, local coordination, and community engagement, especially during large-scale emergencies where the needs surpass the capacity of any single organization. Working together has enabled the teams to act faster, utilize resources more efficiently, and ensure aid reaches communities without delay.

Long-term recovery remains a significant hurdle beyond the initial emergency phase. Restoring livelihoods, repairing homes, rebuilding infrastructure, and ensuring access to healthcare and education require sustained support long after the media spotlight moves on. Recovery involves more than just physical reconstruction; it is about restoring confidence and building community resilience so families can regain stability after months of uncertainty.

About Bharat Benevita Foundation

Bharat Benevita Foundation is actively engaged in community development and social welfare initiatives, with a focus on improving access to essential services for underserved populations. Through this partnership, both organisations combined their strengths to deliver timely assistance where it was needed most.

"No single organisation can meet a crisis of this scale alone," said Deepak Kumar Saw, CEO of Bharat Benevita Foundation. "Partnering with True Impact Foundation let us combine local coordination with wider reach, and that is what got relief to families faster. We have worked in these communities long enough to know that floods do not just take homes, they take stability for months afterward. Standing with them early, and staying engaged after the water recedes, is the commitment we made."

As Assam works toward recovery, relief efforts remain vital for families still grappling with displacement, damaged homes, and lost livelihoods. This initiative serves as a reminder that meaningful change is achievable when organizations collaborate with a shared purpose, reaffirming True Impact Foundation's commitment to standing with communities during times of crisis and strengthening hope for families as they rebuild their lives.
