Himalayan Rim Exhibition: India's Wuxia Craze Just Exploded!

On 20 July, the 2026 2nd Himalayan Rim Film Exhibition launched in India, hosted at the auditorium of the Department of Management Sciences (PUMBA) at Savitribai Phule Pune University. Centered on the theme "United by Martial Arts, Bound by Cinematic Light," the event highlights the artistry and ethos of Chinese wuxia cinema. Through a mix of screenings, academic forums, and direct engagement with filmmakers, the exhibition serves as a vibrant hub for cultural and professional exchange between Chinese and Indian participants.

The proceedings kicked off with an AI-generated promotional film, signaling a program that blends cinematic heritage with modern technological advancements. A highlight of the opening was a keynote address by Professor Tan Zheng, Editor-in-Chief of Film Art, titled "The Global Film Ecosystem in Fundamental Transformation (2019–2025)." By analyzing shifts across the international film landscape—ranging from industry restructuring and technological breakthroughs to changing viewer habits—Professor Tan explored how film continues to function as a vital tool for cultural connection. His insights prompted a lively dialogue, with students from both China and India exchanging perspectives on storytelling, filmmaking, and the trajectory of global screen industries.

Later that afternoon, the venue was filled for the Indian premiere of Blades of the Guardians: Wind Rises in the Desert, a standout contemporary wuxia blockbuster from China. The film utilizes advanced animation and digital visual effects to tell the story of a caravan guard tasked with protecting a mysterious child across a harsh western desert. Its compelling narrative, which emphasizes the wuxia principle that a promise must be kept at all costs, struck a chord with the audience, drawing applause for its portrayal of loyalty, integrity, and moral courage.

The energy remained high during a live virtual session with the film's legendary director, Yuen Woo-ping. Connecting via video link, the renowned filmmaker discussed the progression of martial arts cinema, advancements in action choreography, and the increasing influence of digital production tools. He engaged with faculty and students on how new technologies can broaden the artistic scope of the wuxia genre while maintaining its core cultural identity. The film’s blend of traditional martial arts storytelling and digital techniques provided attendees with a clear look at the ongoing evolution of Chinese cinema.

Following the exhibition's debut, conversations regarding wuxia culture, cinematic technology, and cross-cultural narratives continued throughout the campus. Dr. Rajesh Pahurkar, Head of the Department of Management Sciences (PUMBA), praised the film for its distinct Eastern aesthetics, strong character development, and sophisticated production quality. He noted that the fresh approach to traditional Chinese culture offers valuable insights for contemporary film marketing and communication, while also deepening the local audience's connection to and appreciation for Chinese cinema.

The exhibition is organized by Hangzhou 1905 Culture & Media Co., Ltd., with support from the Department of Management Sciences (PUMBA) and the Department of Media and Communication Studies at Savitribai Phule Pune University.
