Prince Mohammed Bin Salman’s Project Restores Authenticity Of Al-Ruwaibah Mosque Roof In Qassim Region
The Al-Ruwaibah Mosque in Buraydah, located in the Qassim Region, is undergoing restoration as part of Prince Mohammed bin Salman's initiative to develop historic mosques. This project, now in its second phase, aims to preserve the mosque's original materials and spatial features while allowing necessary additions that do not compromise its historical character.
Al-Ruwaibah Mosque, situated 7.5 km southeast of Buraydah municipality, has a rich history spanning over 130 years. It has only been restored once before, in 1364 AH. The mosque has served as a hub for prayer and Quranic study and has been a place for teaching reading, writing, and various sciences.

The restoration focuses on maintaining the mosque’s traditional roof made from clay, tamarisk wood, and palm fronds. This roof includes lintels and perpendicular trunks covered with palm branches and a clay layer that insulates and drains rainwater. These elements are crucial to preserving the mosque's authentic architectural identity.
Before restoration began, the mosque covered an area of 203.93 square meters with a capacity for 60 worshipers. Upon completion, its area will expand to 232.61 square meters, allowing it to accommodate up to 74 worshipers. This expansion ensures that more people can benefit from this cultural landmark.
The project aims to balance traditional construction methods with modern standards to ensure sustainability. Saudi companies specializing in heritage restoration lead the work, with Saudi engineers actively involved in maintaining structural durability while preserving authenticity.
This initiative highlights the importance of preserving cultural landmarks while adapting them for future use. By focusing on both traditional and modern techniques, the project ensures these historic sites remain relevant and functional for generations to come.
The Al-Ruwaibah Mosque continues to be a vital cultural and educational landmark in the region. Its restoration not only preserves its historical significance but also enhances its role as a center for community activities.
