Saudi Arabia Designated As Global Model For Water Sustainability By UN-Water During HLPF

Saudi Arabia has been recognised by UN-Water as a global exemplar in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which is centred on water. This announcement was made at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The Kingdom's Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture shared insights from its initiatives aimed at enhancing water security and sustainability in a region with severe water scarcity.

The Kingdom's approach underscores the significance of political commitment, clear strategies with defined roles, and measurable targets. Innovation and data have been pivotal in improving water governance. Saudi Arabia has also stressed the importance of private sector involvement in service provision and forming strong international partnerships to achieve these goals.

Saudi Arabia Named Global Model for Water Sustainability

Between 2017 and 2023, Deputy Minister for Water Dr. Abdulaziz AlShaibani highlighted that Saudi Arabia's Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) index rose from 57% to 83%. This increase is among the fastest globally for SDG indicator 6.5.1. The Kingdom's efforts have led to enhanced efficiency, coordination, and service quality in water management.

The ministry’s initiatives have fostered integrated strategies across its three sectors, boosting water management efficiency. Collaboration with both private sector entities and international partners has been strengthened. These achievements align with Saudi Vision 2030, positioning the Kingdom as a benchmark for addressing water scarcity and achieving water security.

The lessons shared by Saudi Arabia emphasise high-level political commitment as crucial for progress. Developing clear strategies with specific roles and measurable targets is essential. The effective use of innovation and data plays a significant role in improving governance within the water sector.

Saudi Arabia's recognition reflects its ongoing dedication to ensuring sustainable water resources while advancing towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Kingdom’s comprehensive approach serves as a model for other nations facing similar challenges in water management.

This recognition by UN-Water highlights Saudi Arabia's successful efforts to address water scarcity through strategic planning, innovation, and collaboration. As a result, the Kingdom stands as a global leader in promoting sustainable practices within the realm of water security.
