UAE Ranks As World's Second Most Hardworking Country But Equally Values Leisure, New Study Finds

The UAE has emerged as the world's second most hardworking nation, according to a recent report by communications agency duke+mir. Residents work an average of 50.9 hours per week, trailing only behind Bhutan in global rankings. Despite these demanding work hours, 97% of UAE residents indulge in entertainment activities monthly.

The study, incorporating a survey of over 1,000 UAE residents and global data from the International Labour Organization (ILO), highlighted the balance between work and leisure in the UAE. Bhutan, Lesotho, Congo, and Qatar completed the top five countries with the highest average weekly work hours.

Strong Work Ethic and Vibrant Social Life

Mir Murtaza Khurshid, Partner at duke+mir, commented on the findings: "This study highlights that the UAE is one of the most hardworking countries globally. Emirati nationals and expatriate workers are pivotal to the UAE's rapid growth. However, they also make time to enjoy life, supported by some of the world's best entertainment options."

From Michelin stars to coffee bars, residents love to dine out in the Emirates. Heading out for a bite to eat with friends and family is a regular part of UAE life. The report revealed that seven in ten UAE residents dine out weekly, benefiting the thriving restaurant industry. Furthermore, 66% of residents participate in sports each week, with the figure rising to 75% among young adults aged 18-24.

Entertainment Preferences

Two-thirds (66%) of survey respondents said they participate in sports each week, which is positive for the health of the nation. Youth (18-24) ranked highest, with 75% of UAE young people taking part in sporting activities every week. Around a quarter of people (24%) go to the cinema each week, while a similar proportion (23%) enjoy attending weekly live performances such as music concerts, comedy and theatre shows.

At-home activities also play a significant role in residents' lives. Weekly, 83% watch movies, and 68% tune into live sports from home. The data revealed a high subscription rate, with 81% of residents having one or more paid entertainment subscriptions. However, nearly a third of these subscriptions are rarely used, indicating a potential area for cost-saving. This reflects a global trend that suggests consumers are wasting significant amounts of money through accidental and forgotten subscriptions.

For example, in the UK, Citizens Advice research suggests unused subscriptions cost UK residents £688m per year. In the US, Self Financial collected views of 1,106 Americans. Similar to our own research, they found that 30% of subscriptions are going unused each month, with the average value of unused paid subscriptions costing $25.34 per month.

The UAE's work-hard, play-hard culture is evident from the study's findings. While residents are among the world's most diligent workers, they equally value leisure and entertainment. This balance of work and enjoyment reflects the UAE's dynamic lifestyle, contributing to its rapid growth and global standing.
