UAE Surgeons Create Consortium To Elevate Breast Health Services For Women

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, medical professionals specializing in breast health gathered in DIFC, Dubai, to establish a consortium aimed at enhancing collaboration across various disciplines. This initiative seeks to improve the care pathway for women by fostering better communication and coordination between breast surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, and reconstructive surgeons.

The consortium's formation highlights the urgent need for a more integrated approach to breast health care, as currently, a significant gap exists in the communication among experts in the field. Many women find themselves having to manage their health care journey independently, leading to confusion and delays in receiving appropriate and timely care. This fragmentation in care can prevent women from understanding all their treatment options, particularly in terms of reconstructive surgery following a breast cancer diagnosis.

UAE Surgeons Launch Breast Health Consortium

Dr. Zuhair Al-Fardan, President of Emirates Plastic Surgeon, and Dr. Jamal Jomah, President of Arab Association of Surgical & Medical Aesthetics, have been appointed to lead this pioneering initiative. Their leadership is anticipated to bring unity to the field and raise the standard of care for women in the UAE. Dr. Al-Fardan stressed the significance of the consortium in ensuring no woman has to face breast cancer alone, aiming for a seamless healthcare experience. "The journey through breast cancer is not one that any woman should have to navigate alone. By forming this consortium, we aim to ensure that every woman facing a breast cancer diagnosis in the UAE has a seamless, well-coordinated healthcare experience. Multidisciplinary collaboration is essential for providing comprehensive care and timely interventions, and we are committed to making this a reality," he stated.

Dr. Jomah further underscored the necessity of breaking down barriers between specialties to streamline the recovery process for women. "It's critical that we, as specialists, break down the barriers between our fields to provide women with a more cohesive and streamlined path to recovery. Through improving communication and building stronger bridges between breast surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, and reconstructive surgeons, we set a new standard for patient care in the region. Every woman deserves to know all her options and feel supported at every step of her journey," he added.

The consortium also served as a platform for plastic surgeons, including Dr. Dimitry Melnikov, Dr. Amro Amr, Dr. Vengal Medapati, Dr. Abizer Kapadi, and Dr. Iraj Ahmadi, to share their innovative techniques in breast reconstruction. From implant use to advanced flap procedures, the exchange of best practices and potential advancements is expected to enhance patient outcomes in the region.

Additionally, the specialists addressed the ongoing issue of limited support from insurance companies for breast reconstruction procedures. They collectively vowed to advocate for improved financial and clinical backing for patients in need of such surgeries.

The group's efforts extend beyond improving patient care coordination; they aim to empower women to actively manage their breast health. Emphasizing the importance of early screenings, the doctors reminded the community of the critical role regular breast examinations play in saving lives. "It is our collective duty to remind our mothers, sisters, grandmothers, and loved ones of the vital importance of regular breast examinations. Always remember, early detection saves lives," they conveyed.

Breast cancer continues to be a major health concern globally, affecting one in eight women in their lifetime. Early detection remains a key factor in reducing mortality rates, underscoring the crucial work this consortium is undertaking.
