Emirati Artist Brings UAE's Wildlife To Life In 3D Mural On Tabreed's Al Maryah Island Plant
Tabreed, the leading provider of district cooling services, has recently completed an innovative transformation of its Al Maryah Island plant. This transformation involved turning the plant into a massive 3D mural that showcases the Arabian oryx and Arabian sand gazelle, two iconic species native to the UAE. This initiative reflects Tabreed's commitment not only to environmental sustainability but also to enhancing urban landscapes.
The Al Maryah Island facility, known for supplying crucial cooling services to prominent clients like Cleveland Clinic, Rosewood Abu Dhabi, Four Seasons, Galleria Mall, and Abu Dhabi Global Market, was identified as an ideal location for this artistic venture. This move aligns with Abu Dhabi's growing reputation for fostering public art and beautifying the cityscape.
Upon deciding to proceed with the project, Tabreed's Strategic Communications department promptly sought the creativity of local talents, leading to the selection of Saggaf Alhashmi. Alhashmi, a celebrated Emirati artist, is renowned for his self-taught expertise and his 3D artwork concept captivated the selection panel. His design thoughtfully incorporates the Arabian Oryx and Arabian Sand Gazelle, paying homage to the UAE's rich natural heritage.
Khaled Al Qubaisi, Chairman of Tabreed, expressed his admiration for the project's outcome, highlighting the transformation of a functional facility into a visually stunning landmark. This project not only posed a significant technical challenge but also symbolizes the fusion of utility and art, contributing to the aesthetic and environmental value of the urban environment.
In explaining his inspiration, Alhashmi drew a connection between the mural and the island's namesake, the Al Maryah oasis, known for its Arabian deer. This artistic narrative celebrates the symbiosis of nature and modern technology, mirroring Tabreed's role in utilizing natural elements for cooling purposes.
The execution of the mural was an ambitious undertaking, completed ahead of schedule on 20 April. It involved a team of six artists working at heights of up to 35 metres, utilizing boom cranes to access the 7,140 louvred panels. Over a span of 47 working days, the team applied more than 4,800 litres of paint across 7.2 sq km, employing 52 different colours to bring Alhashmi's vision to life.
Al Qubaisi further commented on Tabreed's environmental ethos, emphasizing the organization's role in reducing carbon emissions through efficient energy use. He proudly noted that this project represents more than an environmental initiative; it's a testament to Tabreed's leadership in integrating sustainability with urban design, setting new standards in the district cooling industry.
This mural on Al Maryah Island not only enhances the visual appeal of the area but also serves as a reminder of the UAE's commitment to environmental conservation and urban beautification.
