Suhail Star Ushers Cooler Weather in UAE

Suhail Star: A Sign of Change

According to folklore, Suhail's rising signals the end of extreme heat and the start of more pleasant weather. This typically occurs in late August. The star is 27 million years old and 310 light years from Earth, making it the second brightest star after Sirius from Canis Major.

Despite its appearance, residents shouldn't expect an immediate temperature drop. Significant cooling will take around 70 to 80 days. The International Astronomical Centre announced Suhail's rise on their X platform account, stating it would appear on August 24 over the Arabian Peninsula.

Sultan AlNeyadi, Emirati astronaut and the first Arab to serve on the International Space Station (ISS) for a 6-month mission, also announced the star's arrival on X.

Historical Significance

Suhail has fascinated people for centuries. Its appearance at dawn on the southern horizon marks the countdown to summer's end in the region. One indication of Suhail's presence is a reduction in the sun's angle of incidence, leading to shorter days and cooler late nights.

The sun also tilts southward following its vertical position at summer's start. Arabs historically celebrated Suhail as a sign of the equinox atmosphere's gradual arrival.

Regional Observations

The Oman Astronomical Society noted that Suhail's appearance signals the end of intense heat and the beginning of moderate weather in Oman and across the Arabian Peninsula. Despite regional differences in its appearance date, it commonly appears around August 24.

Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomy Society Board of Directors, mentioned that by late July 2024, they were anticipating Suhail’s rise within a month. Now that it's been spotted, residents can look forward to more comfortable temperatures soon.

The Suhail star holds great importance for people in this region as it heralds a transition from scorching summer to milder weather conditions. Its annual appearance continues to be a significant event for astronomers and locals alike.
