Teacher Triumphs Over Rare Autoimmune Disease With Advanced Treatment At Aster Hospital

A 46-year-old school teacher, Annie Cherian, recently experienced a significant improvement in her life and career after receiving treatment for Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuathy (CIDP), a rare autoimmune disorder, at Aster Hospital Sharjah. Cherian, who faced challenges in her daily activities due to weakening limbs, sought medical help six months ago when her condition started affecting her quality of life.

Given the complexity of CIDP, especially with Cherian's concurrent diabetes, standard steroid treatments were deemed unsuitable due to potential exacerbation of her diabetic condition. This prompted Dr. Chaudhary to opt for Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG), despite its cost and monitoring requirements. IVIG's choice was made in light of its effectiveness and Cherian's positive response to the treatment.

Rare Disease Treatment Success

Cherian's treatment included an eight-day hospital stay, with five days in the ICU, where she underwent IVIG treatment under close supervision. The intervention led to significant improvements, enabling her to regain strength in her limbs and return to her daily routines without assistance.

Expressing her gratitude, she highlighted the critical role of timely medical intervention in addressing autoimmune diseases and appreciated the care and expertise provided by Dr. Chaudhary and the Aster Hospital Sharjah team. She acknowledged the hospital's efforts in restoring her health and raising awareness about the impacts of autoimmune diseases.

Dr. Chaudhary shared insights into IVIG's working mechanism, emphasizing its ability to bind with and neutralize antibodies against self-tissue. Despite challenges in predicting outcomes and the necessity for ongoing doses, Cherian's case underscored IVIG's effectiveness in CIDP management. The treatment led to her remarkable stability and regaining of upper limb strength, illustrating the potential of IVIG as a critical component in treating CIDP, with considerations for its cost, potential allergic reactions, and kidney effects.

The successful treatment of Cherian at Aster Hospital Sharjah serves as a testament to the hospital's dedication to providing advanced medical care and enhancing awareness about rare diseases like CIDP. This condition, which can affect individuals differently and prove challenging to diagnose, underscores the importance of early recognition and appropriate treatment to prevent severe disability. With an estimated 0.8 to 8.9 new cases per 100,000 people each year in the United States alone, CIDP represents a medical challenge that demands attention for its potential impact on patients' lives.
