Siyam World Maldives Launches First Resort-Based Plastic Upcycling Centre

Siyam World Maldives, in an innovative partnership with CLEAN Maldives, a local environmental NGO, has launched the first Plastic Upcycling Center in the Maldives, setting a new benchmark for sustainable practices within the hospitality industry. This initiative underscores a significant leap towards eco-friendly resort management and ignites discussions on responsible waste handling and community-driven environmental initiatives throughout the archipelago.

The center is pioneering in its approach to transforming plastic waste, including items like oil containers, cleaning product drums, and shampoo bottles, into practical products such as sunbeds, planters, and outdoor furniture. This marks a notable advancement from previous, smaller-scale efforts, establishing a new precedent for large-scale, circular, and community-integrated processes at a resort level in the Maldives.

The facility's operations extend beyond processing waste generated by the resort itself. It also processes plastic waste from Kudafari, an inhabited nearby island, thus reinforcing Siyam World's commitment to aiding the surrounding communities.

Through a partnership model, the center allocates 60% of its upcycled products to the resort's use and distributes the remaining 40% through CLEAN Maldives. This collaboration ensures that some of the upcycled items benefit public spaces on local islands, enhancing communal areas such as parks and beaches.

Currently, the center processes about 800 kilograms of hard plastic each month, contributing to an annual recycling effort that exceeds 10,000 kilograms. This not only aids in waste reduction but has also led to the creation of three new jobs, further benefiting the local community.

Additionally, by hosting educational tours for guests and school groups, the centre plays a pivotal role in promoting environmental consciousness, highlighting the importance of plastic waste reduction, recycling, and upcycling as tangible solutions to environmental challenges.

The launch garnered support from various sectors, including UNOPS, the World Bank, local councils, and the resort staff, showcasing the power of public-private partnerships in tackling environmental issues in island settings. This initiative aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), notably:

- SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production

- SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals

- SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

While operating independently from the Sun Siyam Cares sustainability framework, the project embodies similar principles of investing in sustainable solutions, empowering communities, and fostering innovation for positive environmental impact.
