eSIM Adoption Soars Among Saudi Travelers: Instant Connectivity Vs Traditional SIM Card Hassles
As international travel makes a robust return, Saudi travelers are swiftly gravitating towards eSIM technology, seeing it as a superior alternative to the traditional SIM card. This shift is highlighted by a survey from Airalo, indicating that the majority view physical SIMs as nearing obsolescence — about 70% of those surveyed are equipped with devices that support eSIM technology.
Travelers from Saudi Arabia face notable inconvenience with traditional SIM cards, often taking up to two hours to find and activate them upon arrival in a foreign country. eSIM technology, however, offers a stark contrast, with over one-third of users reporting a hassle-free experience, achieving instant connectivity.

This seamless transition is particularly praised by Saudi business travelers for its ability to enable immediate connection without the need to seek out kiosks or fiddle with physical SIMs.
This enthusiasm for eSIMs among Saudis is not surprising, given the country's young, tech-savvy population and its status as a travel hub. Ahmed Elfiky, regional director at Airalo, notes, "Saudi travelers are among the most enthusiastic adopters of eSIMs in the region, driven by their frequent travel and the convenience, reliability, and cost-effectiveness that eSIMs provide."
Moreover, the motivation to switch to eSIM technology is bolstered by the need for reliable connectivity. Nearly half of the respondents pointed to experiences of inadequate WiFi during their travels, which eSIMs mitigate by offering dependable global coverage and flexible plans. This is crucial for business travelers, for whom consistent internet access is imperative.
The survey also unveiled that a significant portion of Saudi travelers, 65.3%, are already well-acquainted with eSIM technology, signaling a readiness for its broader implementation. This trend is reflective of the Kingdom's broader commitment to embracing innovative solutions, a key pillar of its Vision 2030 initiative aimed at transforming its digital landscape.
With its ease of use, reliability, and the added bonus of not having to physically swap out SIM cards, eSIMs are setting a new standard for staying connected while abroad. This shift not only enhances the travel experience but also positions Saudi Arabia as a leader in the regional digital revolution.
