Saudi Nature Walk Event Advocates For Environmental Conservation
A two-day event organised by the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification attracted over 100 hiking and mountain climbing enthusiasts to explore nature in Jazan. The initiative, "Walking in Nature's Embrace," aimed to promote environmental awareness.
The event, part of Saudi Summer 2024, took place in Wadi Lajab National Park and the Al-Qahar mountains in Jazan's Al-Raith governorate. Participants engaged in various activities, including tree maintenance, clean-up campaigns, and environmental education.
Hikers followed designated paths featuring historical landmarks and ancient rock inscriptions. They carried QR codes to spread environmental messages under the slogan "Naturally Beautiful." This initiative offered locals and visitors opportunities to volunteer in national parks.
Abdulkarim Tayyash, a local environmental enthusiast, praised the region's unique appeal. He described the summer atmosphere and stunning nature of the Al-Qahar mountains and Wadi Lajab as top experiences for tourists and visitors in Jazan.
"The Jazan area, with its enchanting landscapes, diverse vegetation, mountainous terrain and lush green plains, offers one of the most rewarding experiences for nature lovers," he told Arab News.
Tayyash also shared his passion for mountain hiking, which he encourages in his children. "We have made daily walks in Al-Raith a family tradition," he said. The area is surrounded by picturesque mountain chains, ideal for both casual strolls and ambitious climbs.
Visits to the "beautiful" waterfalls in Wadi Lajab are "always worthwhile," Tayyash added. He emphasised the importance of preserving botanical diversity and enhancing the area's beauty through family activities like hiking and photography.
Issa Al-Qarbi, a vegetation expert, highlighted the scheme's role in developing environmental awareness: "These participatory events in Al-Qahar mountains are crucial for preserving our natural assets and developing our vegetation cover."
Al-Qarbi described the region's diverse terrain, including towering mountains, deep valleys and unique rock formations. These features attract visitors and adventurers seeking unique ecological experiences.
"The mountains are famous for their dense vegetation, comprising various types of trees, shrubs and wild plants," he added. This makes them a haven for nature lovers and environmentalists alike.
The Al-Qahar and Al-Raith mountains offer a relatively moderate climate compared to surrounding coastal areas. This makes them attractive destinations during summer months. The area boasts wildlife, birds, scenic waterfalls and flowing streams.
Beyond natural attractions, traditional mountain villages provide insights into local cultures and lifestyles. The blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage makes this region an ideal destination for adventure seekers.
