Saudi Film Commission Opens Doors Lor Local Filmmakers To Compete In First Oscar Entry

In an unprecedented move, Saudi Arabia is now inviting filmmakers to submit their works for the International Feature Film Award category at the 98th Academy Awards. This marks a significant shift from the past, where the Saudi Film Commission would select entries based on its own set of criteria.

The announcement came on Sunday, revealing the official criteria, rules, and the process for submissions, which are now in line with the standards set by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This development reflects the nation's commitment to amplifying its cinematic voice on a global stage and enhancing its stature within the international film community.

Saudi Arabia Opens Oscar Submission for Filmmakers

A meticulously formed selection committee, consisting of independent film professionals and experts, has been established to oversee the submission process. This move ensures the selection process is transparent, fair, and impartial, adhering to the stringent guidelines laid out by the Academy.

The committee will conduct reviews of the submissions and engage in a structured voting process to determine the film that will represent Saudi Arabia at the Oscars. This novel approach underlines the Kingdom's dedication to fostering a more open and competitive cinematic environment.

To be considered for submission, films must comply with several eligibility criteria.

They need to be feature-length, running for more than 40 minutes, primarily in a language other than English (with at least 50% of the dialogue in the non-English language), and include clear, legible English subtitles.

Importantly, the film must have had its first theatrical release in Saudi Arabia between Oct. 1, 2024, and Sept. 30, 2025, featuring at least a seven-day commercial run with paid admission. Moreover, the film must not have been released on broadcast, cable, streaming services, DVD, or similar platforms before its qualifying theatrical release.

Furthermore, the creative forces behind the film – whether it be directors, producers, or writers – must be Saudi citizens, residents, or individuals holding recognized refugee or asylum status, showcasing the Kingdom's efforts to empower its local talent.

Required materials for submission include a digital copy of the film, a secure viewing link, a full list of cast and credits in English, the director's biography and photo, a key frame for display artwork, and proof of the qualifying theatrical release, alongside promotional materials.

For those interested in submitting their work or seeking further information, detailed guidelines and eligibility requirements can be found on the Academy's official website. Additionally, inquiries and submissions can be directed to the designated email address provided by the commission.
