Unleash Your Creativity: Dubai's RTA Calls Filmmakers To Produce Road Safety Film

In an innovative move aimed at enhancing road safety awareness, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has inaugurated a unique competition specifically for students at the university and postgraduate levels.

This initiative, dubbed the Road Safety Film Festival, invites budding filmmakers to produce short films that delve into the dangers and consequences of traffic accidents. By engaging with the creative talents of young individuals, the competition seeks to shed light on the critical issue of traffic safety through the lens of cinema.

RTA s New Film Competition for Road Safety Awareness

The competition opens for entries on April 7, 2025, with a deadline set for 14 July 2025. Aspiring filmmakers are encouraged to visit the competition portal on RTA's website, which provides comprehensive details on eligibility, the criteria for evaluating submissions, and instructions for submitting entries.

With an eye on fostering a culture of safety among the younger demographic, RTA has structured the competition to cater to individuals between the ages of 18 and 35. Interested participants can either enter as solo filmmakers or form teams consisting of no more than three members.

This inclusive approach encourages a broader spectrum of students to express their concerns and solutions regarding road safety through film. Notably, the competition is designed to accept multiple submissions per participant across its varied categories, ensuring that all entries are original works that contribute constructively to road safety awareness.

The competition is segmented into three distinct categories, each targeting a specific aspect of road safety — the perils of abrupt lane changes, the distractions encountered while driving, and the risks associated with bicycles and electric scooters. Ahmed Al Khzaimy, Director of Traffic at RTA's Traffic and Roads Agency, emphasised the educational purpose of this contest.

"RTA has allocated cash prizes for the top three winners in each of the categories: films highlighting the dangers of sudden lane departure, the risks associated with driving distractions, and unsafe behaviours involving the use of bicycles and electric scooters," he stated, underscoring the commitment to making the roads safer for everyone.

The RTA's choice of topics for the film festival is deeply rooted in recent traffic data, which points to sudden lane changes and driver distractions as leading causes of severe road accidents. A new category focusing on the safety of cyclists and electric scooter users has been introduced in response to the growing popularity of these transportation methods. This strategic selection underscores the authority's dedication to addressing the most pressing road safety issues through creative and impactful storytelling.
