Paris’ Champs-Elysees Hosts Grand Open-Air Picnic To Renew Interest In The Venue
Paris' renowned Champs-Elysees has recently been the backdrop for a grand open-air picnic, marking a significant attempt to revitalize the famous avenue. This event, held on Sunday, attracted nearly 273,000 applications, highlighting the immense interest in participating. The picnic featured a striking 216-meter-long red-and-white checkered rug that adorned the boulevard, providing a vibrant setting for around 4,000 selected guests. These attendees, each allowed to bring up to six companions, were treated to free packed meals courtesy of eight partner restaurants, during one of two meal sittings.
Underpinning this unique gathering was the assembly of what organizers dubbed the "world's largest tablecloth". Crafted from 25 pieces of recycled fiber, this tablecloth required the efforts of 150 individuals to piece together on site. The event not only sought to provide a memorable experience for participants but also aimed to reposition the Champs-Elysees as more than a shopping destination. Marc-Antoine Jamet, president of the Champs-Elysees Committee, emphasized the initiative as a call to Parisians to rediscover the avenue's charm beyond its retail allure.
In a bold move earlier in 2023, the avenue transformed into a venue for an open-air mass "dictation" spellathon, engaging France's avid readers in a unique challenge. Organizers arranged 1,779 desks along the boulevard in an ambitious attempt to set a world record for the largest dictation spelling competition.
Despite its status as a top tourist draw, the Champs-Elysees has seen a gradual decline in local patronage over the years. This shift has impacted longstanding establishments such as the historic UGC Normandie cinema, opened in 1937, which announced its closure in June due to dwindling business. In response to these challenges, the Committee is set to unveil a comprehensive 1,800-page study outlining potential strategies for revitalizing the Champs-Elysees. This study aims to explore innovative ways to breathe new life into this iconic Parisian landmark.
