A $2.4 Billion Wellness Retreat Is Coming To Oman's Jabal Akhdar Very Soon
Oman is set to enhance its tourism and urban development landscape with the announcement of the Omani Mountain Destination, a $2.4 billion mixed-use project. Situated in Jabal Al Akhdar, this initiative is envisioned as a key player in the sultanate's strategy towards achieving a diversified and sustainable economy in line with Oman Vision 2040. The project, masterminded by AtkinsRéalis, is designed to focus on sustainability while offering 2,527 homes and 2,000 hospitality rooms, along with a bespoke health and wellness village dubbed 'The Vessel'.
Through careful consultation with local communities, the project aims to harmonise with the area's natural landscapes, ecology, and cultural heritage. Upon completion, it is expected to house a residential population exceeding 8,000, alongside an average of 2,350 overnight and 2,000 daily visitors. Nestled at an altitude of 2,400m, OMD enjoys a temperate climate with an average yearly temperature of 22°C, making it an ideal destination for tourists and residents alike.
OMD represents a pivotal development in Oman's ambitious plans, contributing to a projected $33 billion pipeline of planned projects. This development is part of a broader strategy to boost tourism investment to $51 billion by 2040, building on the $7.8 billion successfully invested between 2021-2023. Oman's innovative 'cluster' approach aims to enrich its tourism offerings, with goals to double tourism's GDP contribution to 5% by 2030 and 10% by 2040.
The project is not just an economic or residential venture; it places a significant emphasis on social and environmental sustainability. The OMD will feature a biodiversity centre, dedicated health and wellness areas, a high-altitude sports training centre, amphitheatres, a museum, and ample public spaces. Dr Khalfan Al Shueili, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning, expressed his vision for OMD as a new international destination that celebrates Oman's natural beauty while fostering sustainable development for future generations.
Preservation efforts are integral to the project, with plans including an escarpment walk in a legally protected National Scenic Reserve. This initiative aims to maintain the area's Dark Sky Zone through controlled light pollution. Additionally, the development will introduce the new Wadi Al Harbi Park, which will offer a variety of recreational activities including mountain biking and extreme sports.
Infrastructure improvements are also part of the comprehensive development plan, with a new cable car system and enhanced transport facilities, including a new access road from the north. These enhancements are designed to better connect the site with Oman's most populous governorates, South and North Al Batinah, ensuring accessibility and further development potential. As Oman embarks on this ambitious project, it opens its doors to international partnerships, promising prosperity and a sustainable future for the local communities of Jabal Al Akhdar and beyond.
