MENA Dominates Global Luxury Travel With Focus On Sustainability And Culture
The Middle East and North Africa (M) region is leading in the luxury travel sector, with high expenditures and a strong inclination towards sustainable eco-luxury and culturally enriching experiences. This insight comes from Mastercard's latest report, 'Affluent Travel: A Middle East Perspective', unveiled at the Arabian Travel Market 2024. The report highlights key trends shaping the future of luxury travel, including the preference for new, uncharted destinations, short trips, and the blend of business with leisure, known as 'bleisure’.
According to research by Grand View Research, the global luxury travel market is on track to expand by 7.9% (CAGR) from 2024 to 2030. High-net-worth individuals, who are predicted to account for 36% of global travel spending, are driving this growth. A study by Jones Lang LaSalle underscores the significant contribution of affluent travelers to the travel industry's economy.

Amnah Ajmal, Executive Vice President, Market Development EEMEA at Mastercard, stated, "We are committed to connecting people to their passion for travel. It's wonderful to sustainability, cultural immersion, and purpose as key considerations for high-net-worth individuals when choosing how to travel."
A YouGov study that 36% of luxury travelers seek to immerse themselves in different cultures. The trend of combining business trips with leisure activities is becoming increasingly popular, especially among remote workers and digital nomads. Additionally, solo travel is gaining momentum, with a significant number of travelers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia having embarked on solo journeys.
Affluent consumers are increasingly drawn to sustainable and authentic eco-luxury experiences. According to Euromonitor, a substantial 38% of luxury seekers are willing to pay more for sustainable travel features. Younger affluent travelers, in particular, show a strong preference for eco-friendly accommodations and are willing to invest in less carbon-intensive transport options.
Meaningful experiences over material things
The preference for meaningful travel experiences over material possessions is more pronounced among affluent travelers. The YouGov report indicates that more than half of this demographic values unique cultural and eco-friendly travel experiences above shopping and souvenirs. There is a willingness to pay extra for personalized tours and stays at remote, eco-friendly resorts.
Personalization, privacy, and pampering
For luxury travelers, personalized experiences take precedence over location. Quality accommodation and exemplary customer service are essential, with many willing to pay a premium for privacy and exclusivity. Future hospitality trends, as highlighted by Marriott Bonvoy research, include digital concierges that adjust the environment to guest preferences in real-time.
High-spending loyalty supporters
GCC travelers rank among the highest spenders, with Kuwaiti tourists spending significantly in destinations like Paris. Affluent individuals are also active participants in loyalty programs, valuing exclusive services such as airport lounges and priority boarding. The trend reflects the importance of loyalty benefits to high-net-worth travelers.
As the luxury travel market evolves, Millennials and Gen Z are emerging as key luxury seekers, with Gen X expected to drive travel growth within the GCC. Interestingly, MENA is the only region where airport arrivals have surpassed pre-pandemic levels, with destinations like Qatar and Saudi Arabia seeing significant increases in visitors. This surge underscores the region's growing influence in the global travel landscape.
