Why Maintaining Oral Health During Ramadan Fasting Is Crucial For Your Health

The significance of maintaining oral hygiene cannot be overstated. It is a fundamental aspect of overall health, as poor oral health has been linked to various diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections.

Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups are crucial in preventing tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues. Oral hygiene not only affects our physical health but also has implications on our social interactions and self-esteem.

61 of Fasters Use Mouthwash During Ramadan

Bad breath, discolored teeth, and other oral health problems can negatively impact one's confidence and how they are perceived by others. Therefore, prioritizing oral hygiene is essential for both our physical well-being and social confidence.

A significant majority, 84% of participants, in a recent survey from the UAE and Saudi Arabia believe that incorporating mouthwash into their daily routine can significantly improve their oral hygiene during Ramadan.

This finding is particularly noteworthy as the survey, conducted by Kenvue, the company behind Listerine, also revealed that maintaining fresh breath and good oral hygiene are the primary reasons 61% of fasters continue to use mouthwash throughout the Holy Month.

The participants, comprising males and females aged between 18 to 45, including both expats and citizens of the respective countries, underline the importance placed on oral health during this period.

The insights from over 600 respondents underscore the challenges faced in maintaining oral health, especially during Ramadan when routines undergo significant changes. Despite the diligent practice of brushing and flossing, these actions alone are not sufficient to prevent the formation of plaque, which makes up a substantial part of the mouth's total makeup.

It's here that the role of mouthwash is emphasised, with clinical studies backing its effectiveness. When used as part of a comprehensive oral care routine that includes brushing, flossing, and rinsing, mouthwash can significantly reduce plaque buildup, offering 24-hour protection and contributing to overall oral health.

Rodney Smith, GCC Country Director at Kenvue, expressed awareness of the unique challenges faced by those fasting during Ramadan. He highlighted the company's commitment to providing science-backed oral health guidance and collaborating with dental experts to ensure their products meet the needs of consumers observing the Holy Month.

This approach is aimed at supporting and raising awareness about the importance of oral hygiene, particularly as daily routines shift during Ramadan. Smith's remarks echo the company's dedication to aligning their offerings with cultural practices and beliefs, ensuring that those fasting can maintain their oral health effectively.

Dr. Rima J. Abdallah, a Consultant Periodontist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, pointed out the heightened risk of oral health issues during Ramadan. She noted that reduced food and water intake leads to lower saliva production, which can accelerate the buildup of plaque and bacteria.

This, in turn, increases the risks of bad breath, cavities, and gum problems. Dr. Abdallah strongly recommends a comprehensive oral hygiene routine that includes flossing, brushing, and rinsing with mouthwash to safeguard teeth and gums throughout the fasting period.

In line with World Oral Health Day, Kenvue has taken proactive steps to heighten awareness about oral health. The company has partnered with local authorities to distribute over 10,000 Listerine products to the public this Ramadan. This initiative not only underscores Kenvue's commitment to combating oral disease but also aims to encourage the adoption of better oral hygiene practices among the fasting population.
