Iconic Dugong Sculpture By Jeff Koons Leaves Doha After 18 Months
After a year and a half, the famous Dugong sculpture by Jeff Koons is being decommissioned from Masrah Park in Doha, as confirmed by Qatar Museums (QM). The 24-meter tall and 32-meter long stainless steel installation quickly became an iconic part of the city after its unveiling and was initially intended to stay for six months before and after the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The sculpture, which symbolizes Qatar's marine heritage, has received an outpouring of support from the Qatari artistic community who wish for it to remain in Doha. Hassan Al Herz, for example, highlighted the importance of Koons' work in enriching the local art scene and connecting Qatari culture to the international community.
Unveiled in November 2022
The Dugong sculpture was commissioned by QM and unveiled in November 2022 at an event attended by QM Chairperson Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, Ashghal President Saad bin Ahmad Al Muhannadi, and Koons himself. The artwork aimed to raise awareness about the decline in dugong populations due to coastal pollution and habitat loss. Qatar is home to the world's second-largest dugong population, with herds of 600-700 living in its waters.
In a statement on Saturday, QM expressed gratitude towards Koons and his team for creating such a magnificent work that became an integral part of Doha. Bosco Menezes, who collaborated on a calendar project featuring the Dugong, also shared his deep connection to the installation and its cultural and artistic impact.
