Jazan Coffee Cultivation: A Deep-Rooted Heritage Now Thriving On The Global Stage

The Jazan Region in Saudi Arabia has a rich tradition of coffee cultivation, deeply embedded in its cultural and social fabric. Recent state initiatives have significantly improved the productivity and quality of Saudi coffee. These efforts have propelled Jazan coffee onto the global stage, overcoming challenges like water scarcity and difficult mountainous transportation routes.

Jazan's mountainous areas, such as Al-Dayer, Fayfa, Al-Ardah, Al-Raith, Harub, and Al-Edabi, offer perfect conditions for growing coffee. These regions produce some of the finest Saudi coffee. The annual International Coffee Day on October 1 highlights Jazan as a key player in the Kingdom's coffee industry.

Jazan Coffee A Heritage Thriving Globally

The Saudi Coffee Festival is an annual event celebrating Jazan’s thriving coffee industry. It honours the collective efforts that have driven growth in this sector. The festival highlights the economic significance and future potential of coffee cultivation in the region.

Recent data indicates that Jazan's coffee production now exceeds 1,000 tons each year from around 2,000 farms. Over 500 of these are model farms with more than 400,000 coffee trees. This growth is attributed to comprehensive initiatives aimed at enhancing farming techniques and sustainability.

The development of Jazan's coffee industry has been supported by several organisations. These include the Jazan Region Development Strategic Office, the Mountainous Areas Development and Reconstruction Authority in Jazan, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Aramco, and the Saudi Coffee Company.

Efforts to boost production include training farmers in modern techniques and installing smart irrigation systems. Quality enhancement laboratories have been established alongside sustainable rural agricultural development programs to support this growth.

These strategic initiatives have revitalised interest in Jazan's coffee industry despite past declines. They have also addressed geographical challenges like water scarcity and transportation across difficult terrains.

This concerted effort has not only enhanced local production but also positioned Jazan as a prominent player on the international stage for high-quality Saudi coffee.
