Guggenheim Museum Welcomes Five Works By Emirati Artist Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim

The Solomon R Guggenheim Museum in New York has added five works by Emirati artist Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim to its collection. The Dubai gallery Lawrie Shabibi, which represents the artist, announced the acquisitions. Ibrahim is a prominent figure in the UAE contemporary art scene, known for his abstract and organic sculptures that often reflect the natural environment of his hometown, Khor Fakkan.

Ibrahim gained international recognition with his National Pavilion UAE exhibition at the 2022 Venice Biennale, which celebrated his four-decade career as one of the UAE's pioneering experimental artists. The Guggenheim Foundation acquired paper-mache sculptures created between 2018 and 2020, showcasing Ibrahim's artistic approach developed over the past two decades.

The works Dancer Contessa (2020), Form in Object 1 (2018), Bearer (2020), and Standing Body 4 (2020) were purchased using funds contributed by Guggenheim's Middle Eastern Circle. This group of art collectors and enthusiasts is dedicated to expanding the foundation's collection of art from the region. Twin Blossom 2 (2019) was acquired with funds from both the Middle Eastern Circle and a contribution by art specialist Mai Eldib, who also served as senior vice president at Sotheby's.

The acquisition of Ibrahim's works was made in honour of Richard Armstrong, the outgoing director of the foundation. Armstrong played a crucial role in establishing Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, which is set to open in Saadiyat Cultural District in 2025. Mariet Westermann, former vice chancellor of NYU Abu Dhabi, took over as the museum and foundation's new director and chief executive in June.
