Gen Z Faces Workplace Communication Challenges, LinkedIn Finds Solutions

New research conducted by LinkedIn, the world's largest professional network, has revealed a communication gap between Generation Z (Gen Z) and their older colleagues in the workplace. The study suggests that career echo chambers could be the reason for this divide. However, the research also highlights that Gen Z is aware of the value of better communication in improving workplace productivity, learning opportunities, and team morale.

Contrary to the perception that Gen Z is difficult or resistant to authority, the study found that 76% of Gen Z respondents are eager to learn from other generations. However, only half of them actively make an effort to engage with older colleagues. Many Gen Z individuals feel uncomfortable approaching other generations for support and assistance, with 34% admitting to avoiding interactions with older colleagues due to feeling that they always know more. The research indicates that Gen Z finds corporate jargon isolating, with 51% of respondents stating that they don't understand it. This lack of understanding may contribute to the majority of Gen Z professionals (73%) desiring companies to do more to encourage intergenerational workforces. The career echo chamber that Gen Z finds themselves in exacerbates skill gaps and perpetuates outdated intergenerational perceptions, putting Gen Z at greater risk.

Despite the common belief that Gen Z has unrealistic work expectations, LinkedIn research suggests that these views are unfounded and stem from a lack of communication between different generations in the workforce. Like other generations, Gen Z prioritizes professional development, with 74% of respondents stating that a stable and secure career is their biggest priority. When evaluating a company's culture and values, Gen Z emphasizes opportunities for growth and learning.

However, as a generation that entered the workforce amidst hybrid and remote work arrangements, Gen Z is missing out on informal observations and vital cues that typically guide behaviour, collaboration, and networking. The research shows that 72% of all professionals in the UAE and KSA recognize that young professionals who started their careers during the pandemic need additional support in developing soft skills such as communication, leadership, and empathy.LinkedIn Career Expert, Najat Abdelhadi, emphasizes the need to build a resilient workforce that is well-connected and generationally diverse.
