Emirati Artist Latifa Saeed On Artistic Triumph And Breaking Cultural Barriers
It is commonly said that art is a medium that transcends language and culture and floods across boundaries. This proves true in the case of UAE's artists who are making waves not just in the region but also in countries around the world. The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, through Abu Dhabi Art, is currently in the process of bringing two notable exhibitions to Kochi, Kerala, marking a significant cultural exchange between the UAE and India.
Slated for 12 July to 15 August 2024, the Durbar Hall in Kochi is hosting the 'Beyond Emerging Artists 2023' exhibition, following its acclaim at this year's Venice Biennale. The exhibition features the works of Alaha Jaralla, Samo Shalaby and Latifa Saeed, who have been part of the BEA.
We were lucky enough to catch up with one of these prominent artists from the list, Latifa Saeed. Saeed is is a Dubai-based multidisciplinary artist who graduated from Zayed University with a Bachelor's degree in Arts and Sciences in 2007. She obtained the Emerging Artist Fellowship by the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation in partnership with Rhode Island School of Design in 2019 in the city of Abu Dhabi. In 2021 Latifa received a Grant from the Misk Art Institute in Riyadh and participated in the group show "Under Construction" at The Prince Faisal bin Fahd Fine Arts Hall in Riyadh.
This might be a typical question, but it is one worth asking; what or who are the inspirations behind your creations?
My practice is diverse, however currently, my curiosity of the atmospheric phenomena of the middle eastern deserts and the overall beauty of my region. I am deeply fascinated by nature's embedded systems.
As an artist who has effectively 'made it', what is one piece of advice you would give to young artists who also want to pursue a creative career?
To maintain curiosity and authenticity, to be dedicated to a daily practice, to be consistently learning and gaining knowledge and experience.
To attend workshops, events, gallery openings and art fairs. To support each other, and to envision and create a brighter future collectively.
What has your journey with Abu Dhabi Art been like so far?
Abu Dhabi Art has become my second home. It has a unique essence that sets it apart. Abu Dhabi Art is built on a foundation of community, support, and a shared love for art and culture.
Abu Dhabi Art has generously supported our exhibition in Venice, providing us with the opportunity to showcase our work on a global platform. Their support has enabled us to reach a wider audience, engage with international art communities, and share our artistic vision with the world. Additionally, it has connected us with experts in the field, offering invaluable insights and fostering meaningful conversations. This partnership underscores the commitment of Abu Dhabi Art to fostering cultural exchange, promoting Emarati and Regional artists on a global platform.
The 'Beyond Emerging Artists' will be exhibited in Kochi which is the cultural and artistic hub of the South-Indian state. Do you have any favourite artists/art styles from the region?
I had the privilege of meeting wonderful artists and students from Kochi, all of whom are brilliant and extremely talented. Kochi is a vibrant artistic destination, rich in creativity and cultural heritage. The interactions with these artists and students have been incredibly inspiring, showcasing the dynamic and innovative spirit that characterizes Kochi's contemporary art scene.
To end with a fun question; what is the one thing/theme you think is your favourite or that you always find yourself coming back to?
The golden ratio.
