DSS Experiences Black Friday-Like Surge With 40% Growth In Digital Sales And Cross-Border Orders: Key Insights

The Dubai Summer Sale is transforming summer shopping in the UAE, akin to a summer Black Friday. This shift is driven by cross-border orders and promotional discounts from various brands. Flowwow, a gifting marketplace based in the UAE, and Admitad, a global performance marketing firm, conducted research on over 2 million online orders from June 27 to August 31 in the UAE and MENA.

During the Dubai Summer Surprise (DSS) 2024 campaign, also known as the Dubai Summer Sale, merchandise revenue increased by 15%, with mobile commerce accounting for 40% of orders. The sale has boosted both online and in-store shopping during the low season as brands offer special deals and discounts to maintain growth.

Dubai Summer Sale Mirrors Black Friday Sales Surge

UAE Summer Sales Insights

Flowwow's summer gifts sale in 2024 experienced a significant boost, with Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) rising by 160.2% and sales increasing by 162% in the Emirates. According to Admitad data, e-commerce orders in the UAE grew by 12%, with GMV up by 15%. The average order value rose from $69 to $75, driven by mobile shopping and Gen Z's digital habits.

Analytics predict a further 15% rise in online orders for the Dubai Summer Surprise 2025. Mobile commerce continues to grow in MENA, with purchases made on mobile devices increasing from 39% to 40%. Smartphones contributed to 79% of sales in 2024, highlighting mobile's dominance in UAE e-commerce. Analysts expect mobile orders to grow by another 10% in 2025.

MENA Regional Summer Trends

The UAE and Kuwait led summer shopping trends in MENA during the 2024 season. Kuwait had the highest average order value (AOV) at $120, followed by the UAE at $75. Other key markets included Jordan ($55), Saudi Arabia ($52), and Qatar ($50), all showing healthy consumer spending across retail categories.

Across MENA, online sales saw notable year-on-year growth: orders increased by 12%, while GMV rose by 21%, partly due to inflation. The AOV in MENA increased from $30 to $36. In Saudi Arabia, order volume grew by 8%, with GMV up by 16%. The Kingdom's average order value rose from $48 to $52 during summer.

Rise of Cross-Border Shopping Due to Digitally Savvy Consumers

Around 60% of UAE consumers have made at least one international online purchase. Over 80% buy from international websites via platforms like Amazon and AliExpress. These platforms drive cross-border orders to and from the UAE, highlighting growing interest in international markets.

Flowwow data shows a 20% increase in cross-border gifting demand during summer 2024. Many UAE residents travel abroad but continue ordering gifts online — either into or out of the country. Leading countries include the UK (17%), USA (15%), Russia (12%), Saudi Arabia (10%), Germany (5%), France (5%), Netherlands (4%), Kazakhstan (4%), Spain (4%), Turkey (4%), Italy (3%).

Leading Summer Categories

Summer shopping data for MENA reveals Fashion leading at 21% of purchases. Home & Garden follows at 19%, then Electronics at 18%. Consumers focus on lifestyle upgrades and tech essentials. "Dubai Summer Sale shows strong interest in fashion," said Anna Gidirim, CEO at Admitad.

"Fashion leads with 28% of e-commerce purchases: local consumers buy fashion items both locally and globally." Electronics (17%) and Home & Garden (14%) remain popular categories among UAE shoppers. Spending on Car Products (11%) and Toys & Hobbies (7.5%) indicates focus on home life and mobility.

Saudi Arabia mirrors this pattern: Fashion leads at 22%, Electronics at 19%, Home & Garden at 15%. Car Products attract interest at 10%, while Toys & Hobbies capture attention at around seven percent during summer.

The rise of cross-border gifting reflects broader patterns; international travel bookings surged by July-August compared to last year. Europe accounted for most visa requests as millions travelled abroad this summer.

"The growth in cross-border orders shows just how open and globally connected the UAE market is," said Slava Bogdan, CEO at Flowwow. "During Dubai Summer Sale we see people not only shopping for themselves but also sending gifts abroad."

The Dubai Summer Sale is reshaping summer shopping habits through online spending surges, cross-border gifting trends, and mobile-first purchases — boosting an e-commerce market now worth over $8.80 billion.
