Dr. Rana AlMutawa's Urban Ethnography Work Launched As Photo Exhibition At Kutubna Cultural Center

The Kutubna Cultural Center in Dubai unveiled the details of an enriching urban ethnography photo exhibition by Dr. Rana AlMutawa. Titled "Everyday Life in the Spectacular City," this exhibition marks Dr. AlMutawa's debut solo showcase in Dubai. It is scheduled to run from May 12 until July 4, 2024, at the center's premises in Nadd Al Hamar, offering free admission to all visitors.

The exhibition features over 33 documentary photographs, a selection from Dr. AlMutawa's fieldwork spanning 2017 to 2021. These images are integral to her groundbreaking book, "Everyday Life in the Spectacular City: Making home in Dubai", published by the University of California Press. The book and exhibition together explore the dynamic interaction between Dubai's middle-class citizens, long-term residents, and the city's urban landscape, challenging prevailing stereotypes of Dubai as merely a collection of grandiose projects and commercial spaces.

Dr. AlMutawa's work illuminates how developments, from vast shopping malls to ambitious megaprojects, are not just architectural feats but serve as evolving cultural sites that address residents' social needs. Through her lens, spaces often dismissed as superficial are revealed as settings where belonging, memory, and social norms are actively negotiated.

The exhibition and the book delve into themes of authenticity, belonging vs. exclusion, and agency, offering a nuanced narrative that counters the view of Dubai's inhabitants as passive victims of rapid urbanization. Dr. AlMutawa, an Emirati herself, brings a personal and scholarly perspective to the discourse, highlighting the city's cosmopolitanism and the complex social hierarchies and inequalities within it.

Kutubna Cultural Center, established in 2023, is Dubai's newest independent bookstore and cultural hub. It aims to provide an inclusive space for the community to engage with books, art, and culture over specialty coffee. Kutubna celebrates Khaleeji, Arab, Middle Eastern, North African, and Muslim intellectual and creative contributions, hosting a variety of events including lectures, workshops and activities for all ages.
