Dubai Culture and Tashkeel Introduce Takhayyal Art Installation to Foster Community Engagement
In a significant move to make art more accessible to the public, Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, in partnership with Tashkeel, has introduced a captivating new public art installation called 'Takhayyal’. This piece, crafted by the renowned Franco-Tunisian artist eL Seed, is a part of the ambitious Dubai Public Art initiative aimed at transforming Dubai into a live gallery that everyone can enjoy. 'Takhayyal’ stands as a testament to the city's dedication to fostering a vibrant cultural and artistic scene.
'Takhayyal' is not only a visual treat but also a medium that encourages the audience to engage with art on a deeper level. Drawing inspiration from the concept of venturing into the unexplored, the installation invites viewers to delve into the realms of imagination and creativity. It beautifully combines Arabic calligraphy with modern design, acting as a conduit between the rich heritage of the region and contemporary creative expressions. This blend symbolizes the fusion of tradition and innovation, echoing Dubai's dynamic cultural ethos.

Dr Saeed Mubarak bin Kharbash, CEO of the Arts, Design, and Literature Sector at Dubai Culture, emphasized the vital role of public art in enhancing Dubai's cultural landscape. He remarked, "The significance of the Public Art Strategy lies in its ability to create a distinctive cultural and artistic environment in Dubai, shaping the city's visual identity while showcasing innovative artistic experiences that contribute to the strength of the cultural and creative industries. The artwork 'Takhayyal' is a valuable addition to Dubai's artistic landscape, reinforcing Dubai Culture's commitment to empowering artists and creatives, encouraging them to express their perspectives, advance their creative journeys, and present their work to a diverse audience."
Sheikha Lateefa bint Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the visionary behind Tashkeel and its Executive Director, shared her insights into the essence of 'Takhayyal’. She stated, "'Takhayyal' is more than just a word; it is the foundation of every artist's journey. Imagination knows no limits—this is the essence of Tashkeel's mission, continuously exploring new possibilities and supporting artists in realising their vision. eL Seed's sculptural journey began right here in 2013 during his artist residency at Tashkeel, where he first mixed his now-signature pink hue on site. With 'Takhayyal' now installed in Nad Al Sheba, we celebrate how imagination serves as both the starting point and the destination for every artistic journey."
Reflecting on the creation of 'Takhayyal’, eL Seed shared his personal connection to the piece and its significance in his artistic journey. He expressed, "'Takhayyal' embodies the spirit of Tashkeel—an invitation to dream, push boundaries, and create beyond the ordinary. When Sheikha Latifa first invited me for an artist residency in 2013, she challenged me with these very words: 'Imagine something you have never done before.' That phrase led me to create my first sculpture, which culminated in my debut solo exhibition, 'Declaration,' painted in my signature pink (219C). Today, 12 years later, I return to complete this journey with 'Takhayyal'—a tribute to Tashkeel, to Sheikha Latifa's vision, and to the limitless power of imagination."
eL Seed's relationship with Tashkeel dates back to November 2013 when he first joined as an artist-in-residence. He has since emerged as a global art figure, known for his unique blend of calligraphy and narrative across various international landmarks. From Paris and Rio de Janeiro to the DMZ in Korea and Cairo's Zabaleen district, his art transcends cultural and geographical boundaries, spreading messages of peace and unity. His participation in Expo 2020 Dubai, along with his first solo show 'Declaration’ at Tashkeel, marks significant milestones in his career.
The project 'Takhayyal’, by enriching Dubai's public spaces with art, not only enhances the city's visual appeal but also underscores the importance of creativity in building bridges between communities. It exemplifies Dubai Culture's ongoing efforts to support and showcase artistic talent, while also reinforcing the city's status as a leading cultural hub. Through art installations like 'Takhayyal’, Dubai continues to invite residents and visitors alike to experience the transformative power of art, fostering a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity and creative expression.
