Mother's Day Spotlight: The Inspiring Journey Behind Dubai's Bookends
In a world where the cost of new items can often be prohibitive, Bookends emerges as a beacon of hope for avid readers and environmentally conscious individuals alike. This innovative platform has been crafted with the dual aim of making reading more accessible and affordable, while also providing a solution for those with books they no longer need. Drawing from their personal experiences as mothers to book-loving kids, the Founders of Bookends — Grace Karim and Somia Anwar — were driven to tackle the challenges associated with the accessibility and affordability of quality reading materials.
On this Mother's Day, we spoke to the duo on their inspirations and insights.

What inspired you to start Bookends?
Bookends was born from a simple realization - new books often come with a hefty price tag, kids swiftly outgrow them, and maintaining a diverse collection demands considerable space. Yet, many of us possess books that we no longer need but could be treasures for others.
Bookends addresses this by offering affordable prices, encouraging more reading for enthusiasts, and minimizing screen time for children. Additionally, we provide a platform for you to sell those books you no longer require. In essence, Bookends is your go-to for a budget-friendly refresh of your bookshelf.
How has your experience as a mother of avid readers influenced the development of Bookends?
The motive behind founding Bookends stemmed from our desire for diverse books for our children. Faced with limited space and the high cost of acquiring new books, we sought a solution to afford ample variety. These challenges were catalysts for establishing the company, recognizing the need to address the accessibility and affordability of quality reading materials for families like mine.
What challenges did you face in establishing Bookends, and how did you overcome them?
A common challenge is that, like any other startup, we have a small marketing budget, and it's expensive to advertise. Additionally, creating awareness of choosing used books over new ones is difficult, as people here are used to the traditional way of always buying a new item. However, this trend is changing as more and more people become more environmentally conscious.
Can you provide some insights into the process of buying and selling books on Bookends?

Bookends operates as a marketplace facilitating the purchase and sale of pre-loved books. We boast an online inventory of 20,000 books and over 5,000 titles in our physical store, spanning 13 languages. As a customer, you can effortlessly browse and order through our website and enjoy delivery services across the UAE. The process is simple for sellers: provide us with your books, and we care for the rest. We post your books on our website, incorporating our service charge at your specified price. Once a sale is made, you accumulate credit with us, which can be redeemed for purchasing other books online. Bookends ensures a seamless and rewarding experience for both buyers and sellers.
What are some of your customers' most popular book genres and titles?
Among our clientele, self-help books reign supreme, followed closely by children's literature and young adult fiction. These genres dominate our shelves, reflecting the diverse interests of our customers. From personal growth to family-friendly reads and coming-of-age tales, these genres cater to the varied tastes of our patrons. As a result, we prioritize stocking a wide selection of titles within these categories to meet the demands of our diverse customer base. Whether seeking inspiration, entertainment, or emotional resonance, our customers find solace and satisfaction within the pages of these popular genres.
Do you have any exciting projects or initiatives in the pipeline?
We aim to rehome at least 5000 books monthly. Collaborate more with Corporations to bring reading into their cultures and schools through running book fairs — and expansions through Franchising into other GCC countries. Currently, we have Thrift for Good and Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services on board, and another Dubai-based charity is about to join us.
What advice would you give aspiring entrepreneurs?
Find genuine passion in your pursuits, ensuring they address a real need. Persevere relentlessly, focusing on solutions rather than monetary gains. Start small, then incrementally expand your endeavors.
