Dr. Surender Singh Kandhari's Latest Book Explores Loyola College's 100-Year-Old Rich Legacy
Dr. Surender Singh Kandhari, Chairman and Founder of the Al Dobowi Group, last week unveiled a commemorative book titled "Loyola: 100 Years of Shaping Futures". This book, authored by Dr. Kandhari, details the history of Loyola College and features stories from its distinguished alumni from the 1964-67.
In an interview with OneArabia, Dr. Kandhari highlights that the book is a testament to Loyola College's significant role in shaping futures and producing leaders, philanthropists, and scientists.

Loyola College's Impact and Legacy
Dr. Kandhari shared that his motivation to write the book stemmed from his admiration for the college's impact on its students. He described the institution as a place that not only shapes futures but also produces leaders, philanthropists, and scientists. The faculty, particularly the Jesuit fathers, treat every student with great care and attention.
He also shared an incident involving Fr. Tambi, the hostel warden. Dr. Kandhari and his friend once skipped college to watch a movie and returned late in the evening. Fr. Tambi confronted them sternly but then surprised them by giving them chocolates and advising them not to repeat their actions.
This approach of balancing discipline with kindness left a lasting impression on Dr. Kandhari and his peers. He emphasized that such treatment was common among the Jesuit fathers, who were deeply invested in their students' well-being and growth.
Dr. Kandhari highlighted that these experiences were instrumental in shaping his character and values. The nurturing environment provided by the college played a significant role in his personal development.
These anecdotes illustrate the profound influence of the college's faculty on its students, fostering not just academic excellence but also personal growth and ethical values.
Celebrating 100 Years of Excellence
Dr. Kandhari shared his admiration for Loyola College, highlighting its dedication to student welfare and success. He noted that the institution's motto, "Let the light shine," reflects its commitment to helping students excel. This ethos has produced many notable alumni, including tennis legends Vijay Amritraj and Mahesh Bhupati as well as chess grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand.
He expressed pride in the achievements of these former students, attributing their success to the solid foundation provided by Loyola College. The college's nurturing environment has evidently played a significant role in shaping these individuals into prominent figures.

The idea for a commemorative book emerged several years ago, Dr. Kandhari said, and his team decided that the college's 100th anniversary was the perfect occasion to publish it. They gathered numerous articles from alumni to compile this special edition.
"This collection of writings showcases the experiences and accomplishments of former students, celebrating the legacy of Loyola College over the past century. The book serves as a testament to the institution's enduring impact on its graduates."
Dr. Kandhari emphasized that Loyola College continues to uphold its tradition of excellence. The college remains dedicated to fostering an environment where students can thrive and achieve their full potential.
By sharing these stories, the book aims to inspire current and future students. It highlights how a strong educational foundation can lead to remarkable achievements in various fields.
The publication not only honours past successes but also reinforces the college's ongoing mission. It underscores the importance of providing quality education and support to every student. It includes over 100 articles from alumni and features century-old photographs, making it a cherished keepsake for readers. Dr. Kandhari underscores the unique place Loyola College holds in the hearts of its alumni and their deep respect for the institution.
He attributes this reverence to the college's dedication to education, humanity, and service, as well as the supportive environment fostered by its faculty. Despite having only three months to complete the book, Dr. Kandhari was determined to meet the deadline for the college's centenary celebration.
Dr. Kandhari emphasises that Loyola College's century-long excellence is rooted in its unwavering commitment to education, humanity, and service. He highlights the institution's dedication to providing free education to students who cannot afford it, supported by contributions from well-off individuals. "A lot of students don't pay fees. Who can't afford. They get free education," he states.
He further elaborates on his personal contributions to the college, mentioning a recent book project. "In fact, this book also, I got 3,000 copies printed. 2,000 copies I'm giving to the college to please sell and use the money for scholarship," Dr. Kandhari explains. The remaining copies are distributed among contributors who support the book's production costs.
Commitment to Education
In Dubai, Loyola College also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Al Dobowi Group to offer internship opportunities for its undergraduate students. This collaboration aims to enhance students' practical experience and provide valuable industry exposure through hands-on training with Al Dobowi Group.
Dr. Kandhari, who is the Chairman and Founder of the Al Dobowi Group and Loyola College alumnus, said that Al Dobowi Group will cover the interns' accommodation, meals, and incidental expenses during their stay. The duration, ranging from one to two months, will provide comprehensive training to the students. This experience aims to help them build a career.
Dr. Kandhari mentioned that if the interns perform well, there is a possibility of them being hired by Al Dobowi. This initiative also serves as a form of campus recruitment, giving students a direct path to potential employment.
Promoting Diversity and Tolerance
Dr. Kandhari, a prolific author, has written four books, with his latest being his fifth. In his second book, Lighthouse of Tolerance, inspired by the UAE’s commitment to fostering peace and understanding, he examines humanity’s ability to embrace tolerance across different cultures.
Drawing from ancient civilizations and the wisdom of renowned thinkers, Dr. Kandhari presents a thought-provoking narrative that encourages readers to consider their role in building a more inclusive world. He highlights India’s diversity and the UAE’s advocacy for tolerance as prime examples of harmonious coexistence.
He believes in taking action rather than just speaking about it, referencing Nike's slogan "Just do it". Dr. Kandhari's message is clear: support each other and commit to making a positive difference in society.
"Loyola: 100 Years of Shaping Futures" is already available in the UAE market and has received positive reception since its release.
