‘AlUla Flora’ Book Showcases Diverse Plant Life In Ancient Oasis City
Assouline, a luxury publishing house, has unveiled "AlUla Flora," a book that showcases the rich plant life in the ancient oasis city of AlUla. The publication is part of Assouline's "Classics Collection" and features text by Abdulaziz Assaeed, a professor of rangeland ecology at King Saud University, alongside images by Saudi photographer Hayat Osamah. Artwork from Carolyn Jenkins, Lil Sire, Raxenne, Moira Frith, and Mary Woodin is also included.
The book presents more than 80 plant species thriving in AlUla's diverse landscapes, such as rocky sandstone outcrops, expansive desert plains, and a lush oasis filled with natural springs. Among the plants featured are the Hispid Viper's Bugloss with its vivid funnel-shaped flowers, the eye-catching Spiny Milkvetch with pinkish-purple blooms, and the culturally significant jujube tree. Each species is showcased for its ecological value and role in local traditions like Bedouin crafts and ancient culinary uses.
Conservation Efforts in AlUla
"AlUla Flora" offers a visual journey through the lesser-known flora of AlUla while emphasizing crucial conservation initiatives to restore and rewild the city's ecosystems. Phillip Jones, chief tourism officer at the Royal Commission for AlUla, stated that the book provides insight into the "city's fascinating botanical world," which they have been "carefully and intentionally nurturing to rebuild and reinforce the ecological richness and vibrancy of the region." He added that the publication serves as a visual narrative of their broader aspirations to protect and showcase AlUla's verdant life while encouraging visitors and locals to learn more about their environment and foster a vital connection with nature.
