DCT Abu Dhabi Unveils Specially Curated The Abu Dhabi Masterpieces Collection

For decades, the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has been instrumental in curating the Abu Dhabi Collection, an expansive assembly of art that showcases global creativity from prehistoric times to the modern era. This initiative underscores Abu Dhabi's evolving status as a premier destination for culture and intellectual exchange, highlighting its commitment to fostering a global dialogue through art and knowledge sharing.

The Abu Dhabi Masterpieces Collection, a subset of the broader Abu Dhabi Collection, comprises an exceptional array of artworks and artefacts that encapsulate significant art movements and historical periods. This specially curated collection not only adheres to the highest standards of collection management but also aims to spark global conversations around the art world's breadth and diversity. By focusing on cross-cultural and universal themes, the Masterpieces Collection underscores Abu Dhabi's aspiration to create a legacy of cultural richness and relevance.

DCT Abu Dhabi Launches Masterpieces Collection

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, emphasized the Collection's role in enriching the cultural landscape: "Developing this comprehensive collection, featuring masterpieces from across the history of art, supports the growth of a vibrant cultural scene across Abu Dhabi and the wider region. Creativity holds immense power to drive education and social change, and offering access to such remarkable works is intrinsic to Abu Dhabi's cultural engagement, nurturing a cultural scene, and fostering strategic partnership and exchange opportunities with the world."

DCT Abu Dhabi's initiative extends beyond static displays, with the introduction of exhibition-dossiers that offer insights into the Collection's vision. These exhibitions aim to cover all historical periods and artistic techniques, providing a comprehensive overview of human creativity from its earliest manifestations to contemporary expressions.

The inaugural exhibition-dossier, held at Manarat Al Saadiyat in Abu Dhabi, presented three significant works: Nicolas Poussin's Confirmation, Pierre Bonnard's Self-Portrait, and Zao Wou-Ki's Triptyque 2000 – 23.12.2001. Each piece, representative of its era and style, offers viewers a deep dive into the artists' unique worlds and achievements, from Poussin's exploration of spiritual and societal themes to Bonnard's introspective portrayal and Zao Wou-Ki's blend of Eastern and Western artistic traditions.

Nicolas Poussin's Confirmation, part of his Seven Sacraments series, occupies a revered spot in Western art history, drawing attention to both spiritual and social narratives. Similarly, Pierre Bonnard's Self-Portrait, with its intimate and emotional depth, is celebrated as a poignant exploration of the self. Meanwhile, Zao Wou-Ki's Triptyque 2000 – 23.12.2001 merges Chinese aesthetic principles with Western modernism in a lyrical depiction of nature that transcends visual boundaries.

As DCT Abu Dhabi forges ahead with its cultural initiatives, it remains committed to enhancing cross-cultural understanding and presenting timeless art pieces that promise to inspire and educate future generations. The unveiling of new exhibition-dossiers in the coming months is set to offer more opportunities for public engagement and discovery, further solidifying Abu Dhabi's position as a hub for cultural innovation.
