Abu Dhabi Festival Launches International Competition For Composition

The Abu Dhabi Festival, in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF), has introduced the first Abu Dhabi International Competition for Composition. This initiative aims to support emerging voices in contemporary music by fostering creativity and innovation. Composers worldwide, aged up to 50, are invited to submit their works until 15 September 2025.

Finalists will be revealed on 15 December 2025. The top winner will receive AED130,000, a professional recording session, and a premiere performance with renowned orchestras during the Abu Dhabi Festival's 23rd edition in April 2026. The second-place winner will get AED50,000, along with a performance opportunity and mentorship. The third-place winner will be awarded AED25,000 and mentorship access.

Abu Dhabi Festival Opens Music Competition Submissions

Composers must submit original, unpublished works anonymously. The competition features two categories: orchestral compositions up to 10 minutes and solo piano works up to 5 minutes. A panel of esteemed international composers and conductors will evaluate submissions based on originality, creativity, elegance, intellectual depth, technical skill, emotional impact, and integration of diverse musical traditions.

The jury will assess entries across seven criteria. These include originality and creativity in conveying elegance and intellectual depth. Technical proficiency and compositional technique are crucial factors. Emotional impact and the use of traditional instruments or melodies from various musical heritages will also be considered.

Winning pieces will be recorded professionally as part of the Abu Dhabi Festival Composers’ Platform initiative. This platform has been supporting global music composers for over fifteen years by showcasing their work in Abu Dhabi and internationally. It has produced 36 original compositions and 80 co-commissions so far.

The competition offers a significant opportunity for composers to gain global recognition while contributing to the future of music. By participating, they can showcase their talent on an international stage through this prestigious event.
