Sheikh Mahmoud El-Tohamy Enchants At Louvre Abu Dhabi

A significant cultural event took place at the Louvre Abu Dhabi as part of Abu Dhabi Festival 2024 on March 14 with the captivating performance by Sheikh Mahmoud El Tohamy, a distinguished Inshad chanter known as the 'Sheikh of Egyptian chanters.' His mastery in the art of Inshad, which involves the melodious chanting of Quranic verses and poetry, was on full display, leaving the audience mesmerized.

The concert was a harmonious blend of classical Islamic vocal music with influences from various musical cultures across Egypt, Sudan, Tunisia, and the Maghreb. The audience's overwhelming response was a testament to the deep impact of Sheikh Mahmoud El Tohamy's performance. Huda Alkhamis-Kanoo, Founder of Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation and the Artistic Director of Abu Dhabi Festival, shared her thoughts on the occasion. She noted that as the festival celebrates its fifth year of Ramadan events, it continues to present soul-stirring performances that draw upon the rich cultural heritage of spiritual music, religious chants, and Prophetic praises. This celebration also marks the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan, embracing its values of solidarity, human brotherhood, and coexistence.

Alkhamis-Kanoo emphasized the festival's dedication to delivering globally pioneering performances, including exclusive commissioned works and co-productions. She highlighted the significance of bringing culturally important performers like Sheikh Mahmoud El Tohamy to iconic venues such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Furthermore, the premiere of 'The Carpenter's Daughters' was acknowledged as a tribute to the UAE's commitment to empowering women and recognizing the historical importance of female chanters in Islamic tradition.
