10,000 Steps, 50 Heartbeats: How Aster Volunteers Are Walking Towards A Healthier World

In a bustling Zabeel Park, under the Dubai evening sky, over 3,000 people took their first step—not just toward personal health but to help secure something far greater: the lives of children who urgently need heart surgery. This Mega Walk was no ordinary fitness event; it was the grand finale of Aster Volunteers' 'Heart2Heart Cares 2024’ initiative, which rallied participants from the GCC to India to lace up their shoes and log a collective 10,000 steps in solidarity with the underprivileged.

Led by Dubai’s own Brigadier Ghalib Al-Ghafli and Aster DM Healthcare’s Shamsudheen Bin Muhidheen, the walk was more than a public demonstration of support—it was a powerful testament to the potential of community activism for life-saving impact. Since September, over 23,000 people around the world committed to walking 10,000 steps daily in a bid to fund pediatric heart surgeries for children in desperate need, making this initiative a global movement in more ways than one.

Alisha Moopen, Managing Director & Group CEO of Aster DM Healthcare, perfectly summed up the cause’s significance: "Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of mortality worldwide, responsible for almost one-third of all deaths. Tragically, this includes congenital heart disease (CHD), which affects an estimated 1.3 million children annually.” Moopen’s words remind us of the staggering reality that in places where medical care is a luxury, a single diagnosis can set a child on an urgent countdown. Through the Heart2Heart program, Aster Volunteers aims to stop that clock, providing free life-saving surgeries to 50 children this year alone.

The Heart2Heart initiative not only symbolizes a pledge to vulnerable children but underscores the growing importance of accessible healthcare in bridging economic divides. The initiative started on World Heart Day and culminated on November 3, reflecting Aster Volunteers’ commitment to a heart health mission that is both personal and collective. By asking people worldwide to “walk their hearts out,” the campaign connected personal health with social goodwill, transforming each step into both a personal victory and a lifeline for children in need.

The closing celebration at Zabeel Park resonated with a festive spirit. From cultural shows representing diverse nationalities to symbolic balloon releases and doves marking peace and love, the event blended joy with purpose. The walkers, some rewarded for exceptional dedication, represented a global village with one shared goal: to walk for those who can’t.

Since its founding in 2017, Aster Volunteers has engaged over 95,000 volunteers and touched over 5.5 million lives. Its Heart2Heart initiative adds a heartwarming chapter to that story, where community support and medical intervention meet. The volunteers' step-tracking may have ended with the walk, but for 50 children soon to receive surgeries, the journey toward a healthy future is only beginning.
