Rory McIlroy Takes Golf Lesson From Tiger Woods' Ex-Coach Butch Harmon

Rory McIlroy, the world number two golfer, has sought guidance from Butch Harmon, Tiger Woods' former coach, as he aims for a historic win at the Masters to complete a career grand slam. McIlroy, who has triumphed in all other major championships, is looking to emulate the achievements of legends like Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Woods. Despite starting the year on a high note with a victory at the Dubai Desert Classic in January, McIlroy's performance on the PGA Tour has been less impressive, leading up to this week's Valero Texas Open.

During a conversation on the I Can Fly podcast with PGA Tour professional Morgan Hoffmann, McIlroy shared insights into his preparation. "I went last week to see Butch Harmon for a golf lesson," McIlroy said. He explained that he occasionally seeks Harmon's expertise to get a fresh perspective on his game. This visit was particularly poignant as McIlroy recounted an exchange with his daughter Poppy before heading to Las Vegas for the lesson. Her innocent remark, "Dada, you already know how to play golf," served as an unexpected source of wisdom for McIlroy.

McIlroy's Lesson with Harmon

McIlroy's primary coach is Michael Bannon from Northern Ireland, but he has also worked with Pete Cowen in the past. Despite his success, McIlroy has been candid about the challenges he faces with his game. Ahead of last month's Players Championship, he opened up about his struggles with consistency between his woods and irons. "I have this amazing feeling with my woods at the minute, but when I try to recreate that feeling with the irons, it starts left and goes further left," McIlroy explained. He emphasized that finding separate swing thoughts for his woods and irons is crucial for improving his performance.

The golfer remains optimistic about his abilities and believes that aside from his iron play, every other aspect of his game is in excellent condition. As McIlroy prepares for another attempt at the Masters, his consultation with Harmon could be the key to unlocking the consistency he needs to achieve this significant milestone in his career.
