Rory McIlroy Stays Hopeful For Future Success Despite PGA Championship Hurdle

Rory McIlroy remains optimistic about his performance despite the ongoing quest for a fifth major championship. Xander Schauffele clinched his first major title by winning the PGA Championship at Valhalla, the same venue where McIlroy last triumphed in 2014. McIlroy finished tied for 12th place and has consistently been a contender, with 20 top-10 finishes in majors since his last win, more than any other player during that period.

McIlroy entered the second major of 2024 after victories at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the Wells Fargo Championship. Despite not securing a win, he remains confident with the U.S. Open and The Open Championship still ahead this year. Reflecting on his current form, McIlroy stated, "I'm feeling good about that. I have been on a big stretch of golf here. I think this was my sixth event in seven weeks. I've got a week off and then I'm playing another four in a row."

McIlroy Optimistic After PGA Setback

He added, "I'm feeling good about my game. I feel like things are sort of clicking more, especially after the win in New Orleans. Obviously played well last week in Charlotte. Have a week here to sort of reset and try to get going again."

Schauffele's victory at Valhalla marked a significant milestone in his career. McIlroy was in contention after an impressive five-under 66 on the first day but finished nine strokes behind Schauffele. A challenging 71 on day two was followed by solid scores of 68 and 67 over the weekend.

McIlroy seemed set for another top-10 finish before encountering difficulties on Sunday, finding water twice but still managing to finish four under for the day with seven birdies and three bogeys. Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy said, "Obviously I started the week well, and then I've obviously played decent over the weekend."

"That six-hole stretch on the back nine [on Saturday], not being able to hole any putts, I'll probably rue that," McIlroy continued. "Then the 71 on Friday, as well, was obviously not what I was looking for. Obviously put myself too far back."

Despite these setbacks, McIlroy remains positive about his game. "Overall I am playing solid, game is in good shape, and I've got a week off and then another busy stretch coming up," he concluded.

As McIlroy prepares for upcoming tournaments, his focus remains on maintaining his form and capitalising on opportunities to secure another major title.
