Rory McIlroy Shares Mixed Feelings Following Opening 71 At Masters

Rory McIlroy expressed a blend of satisfaction and disappointment following his performance on the challenging windswept opening day of the 88th Masters. With a score of one-under-par 71, McIlroy achieved his lowest opening round at the event since 2018. Despite this accomplishment, he concluded the day trailing his playing partner Scottie Scheffler by five shots and clubhouse leader Bryson DeChambeau by six.

"It's satisfying in one sense because it's a decent start compared to the way I've played here recently, but I felt like it could have been two or three better," McIlroy shared. The golfer, who is in his 10th attempt to secure a green jacket and complete the career grand slam, reflected on the day's play with mixed feelings. He acknowledged a slow start but was pleased with making a few birdies around the turn. However, McIlroy also noted areas where he felt opportunities were missed, particularly on holes 15, 16, and 17.

McIlroy's Mixed Opening at Masters

Despite these setbacks, McIlroy remains optimistic about his chances in the tournament. "I'm definitely not out of the tournament and not chasing anything tomorrow. I'm playing with Scottie so can keep an eye on what he's doing, and I'm looking forward to getting back out there," he stated. McIlroy praised Scheffler's ability to maintain bogey-free rounds, highlighting it as a key strategy for success in major championships.

McIlroy's focus remains on refining his game to minimize mistakes and stay competitive with leaders like Scheffler. "I made three bogeys today, which is fine out there in these conditions, but just need to tidy it up a little bit to try to keep up with him," McIlroy concluded. As the tournament progresses, McIlroy's performance in subsequent rounds will be crucial for his quest for the coveted green jacket.
