MacIntyre Seals Scottish Open Victory With Final-Hole Birdie

Robert MacIntyre acknowledged that a bit of fortune played a role in his victory at the Scottish Open on Sunday. Last year, Rory McIlroy's impressive finish denied him the title. This time, MacIntyre staged his own late comeback in the final three holes at Renaissance Club.

On the 16th hole, MacIntyre found himself in heavy rough but discovered a sprinkler head near his ball. This allowed him to take a free drop, which he capitalised on by making an eagle on the par five. This shot brought him level with leader Adam Scott.

MacIntyre Wins Scottish Open

Needing a birdie on the last hole to secure his second PGA win of 2024, six weeks after winning the Canadian Open, MacIntyre holed from 20 feet to clinch victory by one stroke. "I think I lost my voice after the scream on that [18th] hole," MacIntyre told Sky Sports. "I thought I was short."

"I've put a lot of work into this," MacIntyre said. "I've changed a lot within the team and worked hard. I wanted the Scottish Open." He added, "I got a bit of luck on 16 that you need—a bit of luck to win golf tournaments."

Adam Scott had set a target score of 67 as he aimed for his first title since February 2020. Defending champion Rory McIlroy ended in a six-way tie for fourth place with a score of 14 under, carding 68 in the final round. Ludvig Aberg, who led at the halfway stage, also finished with the same score.

"I couldn't believe when I heard a sprinkler under my foot where my spike is at," MacIntyre continued. "I'm like: 'no way'. It was covered, and I thought I got lucky. It was meant to be."

The victory marked an important milestone for MacIntyre as he continues to build momentum in his career. His recent changes and hard work have clearly paid off.

The tournament saw fierce competition and thrilling moments, especially in its closing stages. Fans were treated to an exciting display of skill and determination from all players involved.

MacIntyre's triumph at the Scottish Open adds another significant achievement to his growing list of accolades this year.
