Adverse Weather Delays Masters Tournament Start At Augusta National

The commencement of the 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National was postponed by two and a half hours on Thursday due to inclement weather conditions. Originally scheduled to start at 8 am local time (1300BST), the opening tee shot by South Africa's Erik van Rooyen was delayed as officials announced at 5 am that the adverse weather would push back the start time. Despite efforts to begin play, the worst of the thunderstorms may have bypassed the area, but it was decided that play would commence at 10:30 am local time (1530GMT).

The prestigious event was set to be initiated by honorary starters Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Tom Watson, who were slated to hit ceremonial tee shots twenty minutes before the adjusted start time. This delay inevitably affected the day's schedule, leading to the final group, featuring Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa, and Tommy Fleetwood, not teeing off until 4:30 pm local time. Fleetwood, in particular, found himself adapting to an unexpected role of weather monitoring in the absence of his caddie Ian Finnis, who is currently recuperating from an illness in England.

Masters Start Delayed by Weather

With the weather playing a significant role in the day's proceedings, players were braced for challenging conditions on the course. The Masters' official Twitter account provided updates on the situation, including adjusted tee times and information for patrons attending the event.

Among those affected by the delay were pre-tournament favorite Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Xander Schauffele, whose star-studded grouping was now set to tee off at 1:12 pm local time (1812BST). Defending champion Jon Rahm also saw his tee time adjusted as he embarked on his quest to join the elite ranks of Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Nick Faldo by securing back-to-back Masters titles. Rahm was grouped with Matt Fitzpatrick and Nick Dunlap for the first two rounds.

The adjustments made due to weather conditions underscored the unpredictable nature of golf tournaments and the importance of flexibility and preparation for both players and organizers. As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on how these adjustments impact player performances and whether the weather will continue to be a factor in this year's Masters.

The Masters Tournament is renowned not only for its prestige but also for its ability to present unique challenges to participants. This year's weather-induced delay adds another layer of complexity to an already demanding competition. As players adjust their strategies and prepare for altered conditions, spectators and fans eagerly await to see how this storied event unfolds.
