Jon Rahm's Hopes Dwindle On Day Three Of The Masters Amidst LIV Golf Transition

On the third day of the 88th Masters at Augusta National, defending champion Jon Rahm's aspirations to clinch consecutive titles seemed to dwindle further. Despite his controversial shift to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf, Rahm, a two-time major winner, had hoped to join the elite group of players who have won back-to-back Masters. However, his performance remained subdued, with a third-round score of 72, leaving him at five over par.

Rahm's transition to LIV Golf had been met with surprise, given his previous commitment to the PGA Tour and critiques of LIV's format. Yet, his recent form, including a fourth-place finish in Miami and a team event win at Doral, had not translated into success at Augusta. The challenging conditions on Friday, marked by winds up to 40mph, particularly tested Rahm, prompting him to question the decision not to suspend play.

Rahm Struggles at Masters Day 3

The difficulty of the conditions was highlighted by Rahm's reflection on the 18th green's state and the prolonged duration of play due to necessary maintenance between groups. Despite these challenges, Rahm's pursuit for a second Masters title seemed increasingly out of reach.

Meanwhile, the prize fund for this year's Masters champion has seen a significant increase, with USD 3.6 million (2.89 million GBP) on offer, up from last year's purse. This adjustment is part of an overall increase in the tournament's prize fund from USD 18 million (14.4 million GBP) to USD 20 million (16 million GBP).

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods also faced their own battles during the tournament. McIlroy struggled to gain momentum, with early bogeys offsetting his birdies and leaving him out of contention. Woods, on the other hand, demonstrated moments of brilliance but was ultimately let down by inconsistencies that saw him fall down the leaderboard.

Woods' performance included a notable birdie on the fifth but was marred by a three-putt on the next hole and a double bogey on the seventh. Despite these setbacks, both players' efforts underscored the unpredictable nature of golf at Augusta National.

The Masters continues to be a stern test for golf's finest, with its challenging conditions and prestigious history demanding the very best from those who walk its fairways. As the tournament progresses towards its conclusion, all eyes will be on who can rise to the occasion and claim one of golf's most coveted titles.
