Danny Willett Tempted By Early Return To Golf After Masters Comeback

Former champion Danny Willett is contemplating an earlier return to full-time golfing action after a promising performance at the Masters. Despite undergoing shoulder surgery in September last year, Willett made a notable comeback at the event where he triumphed in 2016. Achieving an impressive opening score of 68, the 36-year-old managed to maintain a level par for most of the second round under challenging conditions, before a triple bogey on the 18th hole. Nevertheless, his efforts ensured he made the cut and ultimately tied for 45th place with defending champion Jon Rahm.

Willett shared with the PA news agency that although the tournament was mentally demanding, it was a positive indicator of his recovery and strength. With another seven weeks off, he plans to further his progress before making a full return to the sport. Reflecting on his performance, Willett expressed satisfaction, noting that finishing in 45th place was an acceptable outcome given the circumstances. He also highlighted that playing alongside PGA Tour winners Austin Eckroat and Stephan Jaeger provided a valuable benchmark, showing he wasn't far behind in terms of competitiveness.

Willett Eyes Early Golf Return

The question of accelerating his comeback schedule is now on Willett's mind, spurred by his recent performance. However, he remains cautious, acknowledging advice from his management and medical team about the risks of returning too soon. For now, Willett's focus is on the European Open in Hamburg, scheduled seven weeks from now, which remains his next planned entry into competitive golf unless circumstances change.

This cautious approach underscores the balance athletes like Willett must strike between competitive ambition and long-term health considerations. As he navigates his recovery and potential early return, Willett's journey back to full-time action will be closely watched by fans and fellow golfers alike.
