DeChambeau Sets Daunting Target At Augusta With Opening 65

Bryson DeChambeau set a formidable pace at the 88th Masters, outperforming his own benchmark by two shots with an opening round of 65, securing a three-shot lead over Danny Willett, the 2016 champion. DeChambeau's performance comes after his bold claim nearly three and a half years ago that for him, Augusta National was effectively a par 67 due to his powerful drives. This statement was made two months following his victory at the 2020 US Open.

DeChambeau's round was highlighted by an impressive start with birdies on his first three holes. Despite a setback with a dropped shot on the ninth, he recovered magnificently on the back nine, recording birdies on the 12th, 13th, 15th, 16th, and 17th holes. His achievement placed him as the early clubhouse leader.

DeChambeau Leads Augusta

Danny Willett, returning to competition for the first time since undergoing shoulder surgery in September, finished strongly with birdies on three of the last four holes to post a commendable 68. Willett had only decided he was fit to compete in this major tournament on the preceding Sunday.

DeChambeau reflected on his previous comments about Augusta National and acknowledged learning from his past mistakes. He emphasized the importance of patience and strategic play on a course that can appear deceptively manageable but proves to be challenging.

Scottie Scheffler, the pre-tournament favourite, was well-positioned at four under par after 13 holes. Rory McIlroy and defending champion Jon Rahm were also in contention, with McIlroy aiming to complete a career grand slam with a victory at the Masters.

Golf legend Jack Nicklaus shared insights on McIlroy's challenges in securing major wins, attributing it to occasional lapses in concentration during tournaments. Nicklaus expressed confidence in McIlroy's potential to win the Masters eventually, despite past disappointments shared by other golf greats such as Tom Watson and Arnold Palmer.

The tournament faced a delay of two and a half hours due to adverse weather conditions, affecting the schedule for the completion of the first round. The last group, featuring Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa, and Tommy Fleetwood, was not able to tee off until 1630 local time.

This year's Masters has already provided its share of drama and excitement as players navigate the challenges of Augusta National. With DeChambeau setting an early high standard, competitors will be keen to close the gap in the rounds ahead. The blend of seasoned champions and emerging talents promises an engaging tournament as players vie for one of golf's most coveted titles.
