YPD Youth Conference 2024 Targets Reduction In Youth Violence
Youth violence has become a pressing issue in schools and communities, prompting the YPD Youth Conference to launch a national campaign aimed at reducing such incidents. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), youth violence is prevalent, with homicide ranking as the third leading cause of death for individuals aged 10-24. It is the leading cause of death for non-Hispanic Black or African American youth.
Emergency departments treat over 800 young people daily for injuries related to physical assaults. The financial burden of youth violence is substantial. In 2020, youth homicides and nonfatal physical assault-related injuries resulted in an estimated $122 billion annually. This figure encompasses medical care, lost work, and diminished quality of life but excludes criminal justice system costs.

The YPD Youth Conference has chosen the theme "Good Education is the key to success," inspired by Joshua 1:8. The conference aims to encourage young people to pursue higher education or its equivalent, resolve conflicts without resorting to violence, reject drugs, crimes, and bullying, and plan to become productive members of society.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, July 13, 2024, starting at 10 am and will be available via Livestream. The conference is hosted by Grant Lovell and Bethel AME Churches in Moberly, MO, under the 5th District AME Midwest North Conference.
The primary objectives of the campaign are to promote education as a means to success and to encourage young people to avoid violent behaviours. The initiative also aims to foster a sense of community responsibility among youth.
